PS3 1.11 firmware out!

Go go go! No word on what it changes but its small!

Edit: Ok, so its not quite small as others were saying. It could be that Sonys servers are getting hammered but its not exactly going fast for me.

Confirmation from me, PSStore is no longer horribly slow, its quite fast loading now (yay!)

Quotes from others:

ACCOUNT MANAGEMENT selection is new under the friends list. Before you had to press triangle to get to it.

I've noticed that the browser is now the same speed as my computers, now instant. Maybe its just me, but it wasnt like this before the update.

"it fixes some trouble with using hdmi for video and optical to an av receiver, and that they've also added an account management icon under the network tab..."

Firmware upgrades are apparently between 128MB and 256MB ...

Sounds like they maybe enabled optical out together with HDMI out.

Account Management isn't actually new, unless they've added or changed some stuff therein. It was already there, but tucked away previously (you could access it before by going to your friends list, selecting yourself, and hitting triangle - it was one of the options in that menu). It's good to have it in a more obvious place, though.

How BIG?! Do they just re-install the whole OS with a new version?
For firmware I think you pretty much have to. I don't think you can patch a part of it. For comparison, PSP firmwares have all been something like 13-20 MB in size, getting larger as mort features are added.

I got the update and started the download for NBA 07 (883MB) before walking out the door. Download speed still crawls for me. :(

Wow that's pretty quick! I wonder if Sony is taking a PSP approach to their firmware updates?

It's a complete flash rom image, in much the same way as the PSP one works (but obviously a bit bigger!).. there's no install as such, as the OS doesn't live on the hard drive.

Yeah i thought so, it's the same for firmware updates on all other equipment as far as i know :D

I just thought that PS3 having an "OS", maybe Sony could just release "patches", whereas the firmware updates are really... firmware updates. Probably explains why they're called... err... firmware updates... :D

As mentioned, the OS is in flash, so any changes to the OS have to be made on the flash level.

Does anyone know if there's any OS stuff on the HDD at all?

If there were, wouldn't that cause problems when you used a larger drive? the HDD could be used while the console is on i suppose, but nothing could be stored on it, surely...

I was vaguely thinking the Firmware writes to the HDD if something-or-other isn't there already. But of course for it to get there (and be patched) you'd have to have the update to any HDD content in firmware. So it makes no odds really!

Someone on the Playstation forum also mentioned that some crashing bug(s) is/are gone after the update.

It also sounds like the browser has gone through one round of fixes and optimization. Besides speed enhancement, I wonder how much memory space it takes now when used in-game.
