PlayStation 4 (codename Orbis) technical hardware investigation (news and rumours)

Nope, but I *think* it may be safe to say games are mostly limited to 5GB at the moment, especially crossplatform games.

Why would it be 'safe' to say that? For multiplats it may be a given thanks to the Xbone, but there's no real reason to assume apart from Guerilla slides for their initial KZ:SF demo on non-final hardware.

As far as I'm aware there has been no credible leak about the PS4 OS reserve. So I would simply assume you don't know. Anything else is speculation.

... mostly because I don't see any Sony denial so far.

5GB may be the baseline for cross platform games to maintain parity.

For first parties, I suspect they are more limited by the bring up of their existing engines at the moment. I don't think memory footprint is a concern, even at 5GB. I'd love to see the memory layout for Second Son.

However, this does not mean the OS will take up the remaining 3GB entirely. ^_^

Says someone who obviously knows :). But yes, all info on PS4 reserve so far is speculation, as far as I can tell.

At this point we have both the GG KZSF postmortem showing 4.7 GB used (so we know at least 4.7 GB is available to games) along with Jonathan Blow's remarks about The Witness using "over 5 GB" of memory and that it "won't quite fit" on PS4 without streaming assets. Those are numbers inadvertently provided directly from developers with PS4 kits and active projects. GG providing the minimum of what can be expected for game use (6 cores and 4.7 GB) and now Blow's comments heavily hinting at the max (not quite over 5 GB). Speculative? Sure. But its speculation from what I would say to be good sources. Of course, its all subject to change before release.

Damnit, I let myself comment on this stupid topic again after saying I give up.

EDIT

Adding links and updating verbiage I quoted from Blow's Tweets:

The Witness wants to use over 5GB right now, and that is by a small team. Textures + lightmaps + audio = lots of bytes.

Sadly, we have to deal with streaming. We won't quite fit on PS4, and we definitely won't fit on iOS.

Jonathan Blow and Cliffy B pretty much confirms that sony ram reserve is way less than MS at least right now. I would say 1GB is where its at right now on the PS4.

Well i saw blow's comments on twitter about the 1GB vs 3GB early this week that goes along with this.

I would think he know what sony is doing at this point. Seems to confirm the 1GB and i wasnt saying it confirm MS because i doubt he has a xbone dev kit.

1GB is what Richard has heard too (from second hand sources).

Reposting since this has come up again.

Based on blow's comment i do believe ps4 reserve is 1GB.

*AHEM* The below should give pause to rule out 1GB/3GB OS reservations.

This is why I stopped arguing. Vague comments from Blow who may very well not even have an XBO kit versus actual numbers from him and GG. *sighs*

That said, I'd take Richard's word for it if he had an actual (public) updated statement to make since his original 4GB/.5GB estimate from his sources. A lot of our other pretty solid information is from him and his sources along with VGLeaks.

You're quoting a random forum post, that's a guess based on nothing more than the current open public rumours, from a member who also posts here. And that's new a new guess, and ERP has said nothing leaked so far is accurate (actually he said he knew of no credible rumour that was accurate. Maybe there is a credible rumour he doesn't know of, or maybe there is an incredible rumour that is correct. ;)).

Sorry If I say it but that is no source, it's just conversation on a forum and and I am quite sure that astrograd is the same astrograd we have here on B3D.

Dang Shifty you type faster than me ;)

Sure it give me pause but the comment dont make much sense from blow from the bombcast after E3.

Patrick: What is the big difference to you? Like, If you just look at them side by side? What is the gap?

Blow: There is a couple big differences... So...

Patrick: in practical terms, you look at the specs that one thing, like in practical terms how does it really translate.

Blow: Well certain things have not been finalized. Even now there are numbers about how much ram the operating system take away from your game.

CliffyB: That ram one is the one i keep about sony...

Blow: Thats way higher on the xbox side, i think, than the sony side. Which amount to the machine having more physical ram for all you as the gamer care about.

We also have richard from DF saying he heard 1GB also. I think until we have some more info you have to take it all with a grain of salt but shouldn't be ignored.

One other thing that didnt make much sense is sony was planning to go with 4GB. .5 GB was reserved. At the "last minute" they made a change to 8GB. What would be the reason to balloon the OS reserve to 6x what they thought they needed to run the OS? Seem like a huge waste of resources.

I see why you gave up.

The comment you are using do not go with each other.
Blow
"More RAM means developers spend less time in contortions to make the game run on the machine, more time making the actual game good."

guy on twitter:
" We're loading our entire game in at once because fuck dealing with streaming! We are in a post-360/PS3 world."

Blow replied

"Sadly, we have to deal with streaming. We won't quite fit on PS4, and we definitely won't fit on iOS."

Clearly he is talking about putting his whole game into ram.

You're right the John Blow comments don't make sense, so throw it out and all the other ones and go with what is very clearly spelled out by ERP; none of the current statements on PS4 OS ram usage are correct.
