The bolded empasized parts above are mine. This is where I think next-generation systems will vastly be different from previous generations. It creates different revenue streams and expand the consumers of these devices. No longer do you look at PS3 and say game machine, or XBox 360 and think game machine. It's an entertainment system for the home. I think this is moreso for the PS3 than the other systems. Revolution will have a service to purchase legacy games, it may even include more features as Nintendo is moving away from just games to other features.

This creates a different business model where I believe analysts are missing the whole picture. The introductory price of this system cannot be compared to previous generation systems. Sony is banking on upselling other products from having the PS3 in consumers homes. Following the service model of many of today's hardware systems the price of the hardware will be subsidized by the potential sales of services and cross-branded products.

I think the PS3 will come in as traditional prices for consoles ($300-$349) and it will include a hard-drive standard to maximize the potential for downloadable services and features.

Nah... For Sony the Bread and butter is the Drive - Bluray that is. They will get repeated sales on hi def DVDs through this medium which means a lot more to them. HDD is a delicious addon that extends the power of the PS3 and will be a luxury gamers cash cow for Sony... BRD plays to Sony's strengths and value proposition as a consumer electronics and entertainment compane much more so than a HDD.

Blu-Ray doesn't have music downloads or TV series downloads, or location-free services. Blu-Ray is a big part of the puzzle, but downloadable services apply to everyone. Even those who buy a HD-DVD player as their primary player and not a PS3.

It didn't seem enough to make a new thread for, but since the timing will be coincidental with Harrison's keynote, I thought I'd stick it here. Basically in the new issue of OPM, its Editor-in-Chief says we can expect a "big leap" in PS3 coverage from OPM beginning with the April issue - which will be out midway through March. Hopefully that's a sign of either official announcements from Sony in that time or loosening NDAs.

Are you reading this, Dean?

And no $70 Heavenly Sword, please, I'll go bankrupt.

So is March going to be what February was supposed to be?

It's not like he has control over the price of the games!! :LOL:

March is the new February. And white is the new black.

Poor little February... already the littlest of the months, now it's being forgotten before it's even finished. See what you've gone and done people? See??

$70!!!

Wow, there is no way I'm gonna be able to buy games like I have in the past if this is the case with pricing. I'll probably be forced to use Gamefly this gen while buying very very few select titles. I'm talking at most 3 games a year when i normally get between 8-10.

I hope that price estimate is wrong.

x360 games here in Europe cost 60 to 70 Euros =>71.5$ - 83.5$

gamefly does appear to be a good option, probably 2/3 of games wind up collecting dust, at 70 bucks a pop, I'd be pretty selective before I buy. That said, I don't think it's a crazy price, dev costs are way up, and presumably the games, at least later, will come with more content (with all that extra BRD room). And that's also likely to be the initial price for top titles and new releases, like PS2 there will be plenty of scwhaggy cheap titles down the line and markdowns are becoming increasingly more rapid. If they make God of War II 25 hours long instead of 8, I'd happily pay $80.

Is that with tax to? I would be looking at 75 a pop in Connecticut most likely. You should have seen how fast EB dropped their prices early on this gen when they though they could get away with boosting them to 55. i don't think they will sell well in the States at that price after the launch craziness wears off. Even then I can't see a lot of people walking out of a store worth more than 2 titles if the PS3 is in the 450-500 price range.

Not true for Germany. Without shopping around, the most I've paid for an Xbox 360 game was 55 Euros; the recent "We Love Katamari" and "Shadow of the Colossus" for PS2 cost me 59 each...
