PC local Co-op games

Lego Star Wars -the game Epic Store gave for free a few days ago- has been a great discovery. What an example of what a co-op game should be.

My nephews spent 2 straight hours playing it yesterday. The game looks amazing, the graphics are top notch. It looks like an animation movie for children.

What surprised me the most is how easy it was for them to play co-op.

The game detected two controllers connected, I selected "New game" and bam, the game just appeared in split-screen mode and both were playing together! No hassle at all.

That's something very valuable when it comes to 5 and 7 y.o. kids like in this case.

Another great surprise about the game is that they didn't need me at all to play the game. (I only had to disable the Turbo on one of the controllers, which they set accidentally and couldn't advance in a part where they need to hold a button).

My first try ever of a Lego videogame couldn't be better, my hats off to them.

I played nearly all of these back in the day when one of my nephews was about 6. They are pretty much perfect for that age bracket like you said, the puzzles were just about perfect aswell. He seemed to get a kick out of telling me what character to use and what to do to solve the puzzle/s.

Yeah the Lego games are mine and the wife's go to multiplayer staples. Can't fault them in that respect.

thanks! Will give it a watch for sure.

Taking advantage of this post, gotta add that yeah, MS gotta work on Windows shenanigans when playing certain games. For instance the other day, when playing Team Sonic Racing the mouse cursor was present all the time. I had to somewhat hide it when my nephews were playing by placing it at the very left top of the viewport.

I have 4 nephews and a niece. All of them paid me a visit to have dinner here for christmas -december 24th-.

Aside from my 5 y.o. and my 7 y.o. nephews, another 3 y.o.nephew and a -soon to be- 9 y.o. nephew wanted to play too. So I dusted off two wired PS4 like controllers thus they could play 4 players co-op/split screen.

Windows seemed to detect the controllers, but when playing games, they didn't work. Paw Patrol Grand Prix and Sonic Team Racing, among other games, let up to 4 players to play locally, but we couldn't. It was such a bummer, the kids didn't respect other kids turns and my 9 y.o. and 3 y.o. played the games most of the time, my 5 y.o. and 7 y.o. nephews had to stay there just looking the others play.

Maybe some official Xbox controllers could fix that? Or is it a Windows 11 thing?

watched the games in the video, not one by one. Violent stuff and so on I didn't even check, nor terror games -though I like them myself-. Quite a few of them are Online Co-op, which I don't care about. But many are local co-op/split screen.

In the end I got Lego City Undercover, It Takes Two and Nine Parchments.

No I dont
did you mention it because it's on sale?

Pls come to your place:

partly because it's on sale and partly because it lets you simulate a goat - who hasnt wanted to do that ;)
almost as good as comparing Meerkats

From this list:

If you like games like F-Zero or similar and like to play local split screen (up to 4 players), Phantom Spark looks -and seems to run- really nice.

Gang Beasts -pc gamepass- is another HUGE hit with my 5 y.o. and 7 y.o. nephews. The game is so fun. I gotta admit that I laughed out loud a lot of times when watching them play, and so did them.

this game is on sale and has local split-screen co-op.

Do you know any decent, not very gamepads that work well with Windows for local co-op/split-screen games of up to 4 players or more?

I have two wireless gamepads that have been working well overall for years, but I also bought a couple of Gioteck WX4PS4  wired controllers time ago, and they're very unreliable. Windows detects them, and they seem to work individually -at least I can test one of them, all the buttons, X axis and Y axis movement are detected, but games—whether on PC Game Pass or Steam, Epic Games, etc—don't recognize them.

The manufacturer claims they're plug-and-play, but that's very far from the truth. My nephews (ages 3, 5, 7, and 9) have been here some days during Christmas, and we've tried several 4-player games, but the Gioteck controllers never work.

Do you know any gamepads that can be purchased and just need a single dongle for wireless connection, even if you buy 2 or 4 of them?

Trying to be equitable so they can play in a balanced way, sharing the 4 of them 2 gamepads and playing in turns, has been a bit nightmarish. So I want to have a good amount of gamepads at home that actually work.

The wireless Xbox 360 controller
The Wireless Gaming Receiver (sold as "Crossfire Wireless Gaming Receiver" in the UK) allows wireless Xbox 360 accessories, such as wireless gamepads, racing wheels and headsets, to be used on a Windows-based PC. The device acts in a similar manner to an Xbox 360, allowing up to 4 controllers and 4 headsets at a time to be connected to the receiver.

The wireless Xbox 360 controller
Pretty sure all the Xbox controllers allow this.
thanks for the help. I might get a couple of those. I am still torn though, since I like the Darkwalker Shotpad too.

Do you have any experience with a gamepad featuring a gyroscope?

I mean, can you turn your vehicle left or right in a racing game by just tilting your controller?

I ask this 'cos my 3 y.o. nephew was driving a car in a racing game a couple of days ago and instead of using the left stick to turn the car he naturally tried to tilt the gamepad left and right... which surprised me, and it'd be awesome if that worked for him that way (for him or any of my nephews who have some problems when turning the car tbh....)
