Online article or book to explain?

I was just wondering if someone knew of a book or online article that goes into depth on games and graphics. Given the recent issue between Futuremark and NVidia finally got me interested enough to explore what the hell everyone is talking about. So I'm hoping to find something I can read to explain more about the various graphic technologies and their subsystems work to produce the graphics we see in games today.

... geez, that sounds like I'm an anal retentive idiot...

Anyways, I'd also appreciate any other online articles or book recommendations on similar subjects (common home computing issues as opposed to business computing). I'm a network tech freak, almost to the exclusion of everything else, so I'm looking to expand my horizons (not professional, just to learn some more about computers beyond how they communicate with each other).

When you have the basics, the book

Real-Time Rendering by Thomas Moller and Eric Haines

is the book for explaining (in extreme detail) techniques and hardware used in real-time graphics (and collisions actually).

The 2nd edition (white cover) is relatively upto date (even covers CineFX a little).

Be warned it can be heavy going if you don't understand the basics (and are fairly good at maths).

And some very witty, intelligent, and no doubt good-looking, people gave some assistance to the authors. ;-)

Oh yes, I hear that everybody whose name is in the 2nd edition is also intelligent and good-looking ;)
