Online Activation Codes or why there will be no second hand games (deja-vu) *SPAWN*

You can see this as effectively a price increase on games, especially for those who regularly trade in games once they finish, to finance new purchases.

Next gen games better look noticeably better to the untrained eye. Remember, a lot of people are happy with DVD on the big screen instead of Blu-Ray.

Otherwise, the contrast with free or 99 cent mobile games will be even more stark.

I always expected Sony to use its patent in conjunction with the Vita, the Cross Play/Buy feature and GAIKAI, so you can add a PS4 game to your PlayStation account in order to stream it to your Vita with GAIKAI. Without that patent 1 million gamers could share a single PS4 game and play it on their Vita at the same time. The patent would allow to assign the game to your PlayStation account, allowing you to play it on your Vita or a PlayStation certified smartphone via GAIKAI, but it would also make it impossible to resell the game. This would also put a new complexion on Kaz Hirai's statement, that the Vita will have a very long life cycle: It could be used as a mobile PlayStation 4.

I *think* in the near term, Gaikai will only be used for LAN streaming, and progressive downloads of games. They may also use it for final game demo, PS+ game trial or non-games. The latency may be unacceptable for many gamers.

For no-resale games, it's probably best to tie it with something like PS+.

Frankel this is why the video games industry is such a problematic place, because developers' rights are not protected.

The video games industry is a problematic place because of the Bobby Koticks and the John Riccitellos selling the same crap every year again and again for 50 bucks with day one DLC. We need more creativity and less commercialization.

If I'm not mistaken, that whole line of discussion was moved the RSPCA forum. Or at least the politics and ethics of technology discussion. It's undebateable without discussing moral rights which is not what this forum addresses, so let's end this line of discussion here and just stick to business and technology of 2nd hand controls.

That would be collusion...they would be risking legal action.

If Sony met Microsoft and together decided together to prevent second hand sales, then probably yes.

If EA/Activision told MS/Sony "we won't port X to a console that doesn't prevent second-hand sales", then obviously they aren't colluding.

Given the state of the world, the second option seems rather likely.

Activision already seems to have a solution to used sales...a season pass.

The rumors about Xbox720 hardware and online services so far seem absurdly bogus.

Well you gotta hand it to Microsoft, they are 100% invested in their "future" platform, the description from the EDGE article does indicate something that should be able to run "Metro" apps and Games that in principle should be easier to run on other platforms as well.

Plus points for supporting Blu-Ray, a generation to late is better than ever.

A bunch of Micro Soft spelled with $ for screwing everybody over with the killing of used games, there is plenty ways, and by plenty i mean a whole list of stupid shit that we already experienced by us the past 8 years that have been used to limit "used games" in the gaming economy.

Question is if they went full retard or they are going to hit it out of the park.

Another great question is are we supposed to believe Twisted Pixels now? They are pretty ridiculous themselves with out of control speculation,

Personally, i'd be fine with paying a small fee to "unlock" the used game's content if it was used, like for multiplayer or something like that. I don't see where actually stopping the entire console for doing anything without an internet connection is viable in any sense as a business strategy. Consoles aren't PC's, people don't expect to be treated like any old criminal just for playing games

I always thought it was something natural, associate the license to play a game to an account and nothing else, like on steam...

still, if the console is always connected to the Internet, why sell physical copies?

Edge seems pretty confidant in different directions Sony and MS are taking. Not only is Durango (according to them) weaker, it also won't allow second hand games to be played on it.

This can get legally problematic in Europe. They would need to establish some kind of rent/service contract to avoid the selling of the product. If they sell the product the owner must be able to resell it and that would open a lot potential for lawsuits. But if they get into rent contracts they are liable to remove bugs for instance.

I can understand that game producers are frustrated with used copies but the film industry lived with the same problem. Imagine they would restrict you from being able to resell your bought DVD/Bluray. Nobody would accept that.

Hey, how about being able to do with the game you BUY as you please?

This is winding up to be a repeat of other threads, but apparently those threads die outside the console forum.

Physical Copy, lets me play the game on whatever console i choose to (or at least that is how it is now), it's MINE for ever and ever, when a PS4 emulator turns up in 20 years i can insert my cartridge sorry disc and play it like this: http://www.amazon.com/Hyperkin-Retron-System-GENESIS-Nintendo-Entertainment/dp/B003O3EFY2

I don't have to worry about a company dying and taking away my purchases.
My games wont be locked to some weird "2 activations max" or "game profile" .
Unlike steam, i can own 150 games and in principle play them all at the same time, if i have 150 consoless. I can borrow a friend a game, i can let my kids play the game on their own consoles eventhough i play something else on my own.

Dear publishers, give me my physical copy, do whatever you please with the online part of the game including shutting down servers with every next installment of a long boring series that doesn't really evolve, use DLC's and naked woman to bring down the value of used games (i wont like it but it's better than nothing). Ohh and don't be surprised when i buy the PC version for a lower price when you try to milk me for every last bit when i actually just wanted to give my money for your product.

They aren't preventing the sale, they are just making a used purchase undesirable.

And that's not new.. online passes and on-disc DLC does the same this gen. You'll presumably just find yourself with a demo disc on 720 until you pay some fraction of the new disc retail cost.

I'm down for some sort of used game blockage. At least something to stop Gamestop from hocking their nearly full retail priced used versions on people. Online pass stuff is a small step but not enough. Most sales of games are done in the first few months so they just need to lock down that period before the game can be resold. Or, they can make it more attractive for budget buyers to just buy discounted versions off of Live or PSN instead of running to GS. Or, just have them join PS+ for the super budget conscious who don't need to play all the newest games right away.
