Online Activation Codes or why there will be no second hand games (deja-vu) *SPAWN*

If true then expect this to be unanimous across both PS4 and Durango.

No wonder the EA CEO was expressing his excitement over the coming next-gen consoles.
If true, it must be something MS and Sony have come to decide together. There's no way one would go out on a limb and destroy their 2nd hand market while the other doesn't. I expect a pact made within the industry and there won't be AAA disk games made for any platform that doesn't follow the publishers requirements.

Having just read the article, I'm slightly sceptical. It requires an always-on internet connection. That's a significant requirement IMO. Yes, it can be expected this day and age, but it's also creating barriers to convenience.

Looks like Microsoft is working hard to unwind the fanbase and goodwill built up this gen with users.

They don't seem comfortable having a successful product outside of their core software.

The way things are looking, I can see casuals not caring while Durango hovers around Xbox 1 ltd sales.

I guess I've been behind the speculation front of the new consoles, but one of the biggest selling points of using optical media is the idea of being able to take your game to your friends house and play the game there too. IMO - this is just insane...

More likely the games will be linked to accounts not the the console itself.

That would be collusion...they would be risking legal action.

Gamestop CEO is less enthused however... ;)

Frankly, I think locking out 2nd hand market will pretty much be a deathblow against game stores. We all saw how the PC market died due to online stores taking over sales (or that's what happened over here anyway), MS making a cash grab to seize sales and distribution revenue also on top of their royalties will just hurt them in the long run.

Without game stores selling consoles, where will people buy their consoles? Gamestop and similar sell the vast majority of units, and toy stores and such wouldn't stock just the console itself, there's no margin in that. Most of them don't have the shelf space to dedicate to dozens of game titles either, and first-sale margins are bad there as well, that's why gamestop etc promote 2nd hand sales.

Talk about sawing off the branch you're sitting on...

That's very likely. Means you can take you disc round a friend's house and still play the game.

Exactly.

Also with no used market to worry about finally dev & publishers won't have to ask us that much for games.
When 100% of you customers buy the game new (buying games new is the only way to get revenue for dev and publishers) you can ask them to pay less becse the revenue is 100% guaranteed.
And also no more online passes and games will finally be profitable even without DLC.

How much less is the question. I would hope at least 49.99 becomes the norm, and then with more deals for downloadable versions too.

I'm guessing this is a mis-understanding of some leaked information. Something they (Edge or the leaker) don't understand the full context of. To require an internet connection for game activation, nor less simply to function at all as the article suggest, would essentially mean ceding a lot of emerging markets that don't have stable broadband access (or much access at all), and completely ignore the rather poor infrastructure in some parts of developed countries (including the good ole US of A).

Banning used games could be a problem on the European market. The European Court of Justice stated that people are allowed to trade video games, no matter if its a digital or a physical copy: theguardian

If you purchase an ownership of the game then you are allowed to trade it, not matter what the EULA says. Micosoft would have to sell licenses which would mean that a gamer doesn't own the games that he has paid for.

In Germany Valve is already forced to change its Steam EULA in order to allow its user so resell the digital copies of the games: gamesindustry

I frankly can tell that but the prices should go down significantly.
Also if digital delivery will finally be embraced on much larger scale,on the next gen we should see a further decrease in the prices.
Digital Delivery means no shipment cost, no manufacturing cost and no intermediaries (stores) to worry about for publisher and that means that they can afford to ask us less for games because don't have to recover those costs.

The rumored Sony solution would be smarter than just codes and would work offline. It could also be limited to work on two consoles like PSN games to allow private use

Sony could provide equipment to gamestop that will allow them to take a cut from every sale

I always expected Sony to use its patent in conjunction with the Vita, the Cross Play/Buy feature and GAIKAI, so you can add a PS4 game to your PlayStation account in order to stream it to your Vita with GAIKAI. Without that patent 1 million gamers could share a single PS4 game and play it on their Vita at the same time. The patent would allow to assign the game to your PlayStation account, allowing you to play it on your Vita or a PlayStation certified smartphone via GAIKAI, but it would also make it impossible to resell the game. This would also put a new complexion on Kaz Hirai's statement, that the Vita will have a very long life cycle: It could be used as a mobile PlayStation 4.

I really don't see them dropping prices unless they have to. They weren't happy with "lost" revenues on used games sales.

They might have "sales" earlier or more frequently, as a lot of people who buy at full price do so only with the expectation to recoup costs by selling games used.

They will probably require people buying used games to buy new activation codes for $10 or more.

Maybe you're right, but I don't see the difference between agreeing on DRM for films and music, and agreeing on DRM for games. But as Hecatoncheireshttp://forum.beyond3d.com/member.php?u=88535 points out, it's potentially legally enforceable to allow resale of all 2nd hand games, but AFAIK Sony and MS have been forced to enable this as Steam were. Quite the opposite, Sony have added a 2nd hand relicensing option for publishers.
