Oh boy... what have I done... Samsung HPT5054

Nah, again, at least aside from analog signal noise, the dark areas show shimmering pixels because varying the rate of the flickering is how plasmas produce different levels of color, slower flickering making darker shades. Pixel orbiting on the other hand slowly rotates the position the displayed image as a whole around the screen very slightly in order to reduce uneven phosphor wear.

Thanks Kyleb

I would like to film record how the pixels "dance" in the Panny plasma. Maybe it is my imagination but in dark areas it looks like a coordenated dance in a circular way.

Again, the dancing colors you refer to aren't particular to any specific plasmas, but is simply inherent to the design of plasma display technology. Pixel orbiting is something completely different, you display likely has a way toggle that on and off to see that it doesn't effect the "circular dance" you described, but rather works as I explained in my previous post.

I've logged about 340 hours so far, but my TV says 319 hours (went into the service mode). Slight discrepancy, but at least it's still over 250 hours. Image retention is fairly rare with games now. The only time it seemed to be an issue was near the end of Bioshock.
When you get the Big Daddy helmet the screen only displays a circular portion in the center with the rest in black. Oddly enough, there are times when using the shotgun where it pokes through the blackness. :p
I thought the HUD (health, eve, radar) would have been a problem, but it wasn't. :???: Funny thing was that I was trying to rush through the end part of the game because of the slight problem I mentioned.

I use the game mode from time to time, which I really like, but the component video settings are otherwise set to the following:

Brightness 48
Contrast 70
Sharpness 40
Colour 50 (middle)

Dynamic Contrast Off
Black Adjust Off
Gamma +1
Colour Range Wide

Too bad you didn't hold off for a month. The Kuro is apparently going to be $2000 tomorrow at BestBuy.

I know better tech is always around the corner, but this is one of those products that really separates itself from the rest of the pack.

I'm happy with this set, so not to worry. :) I have to make the plunge at some point, and the waiting game is always a problem. :p

Are you getting a Kuro? ;)

hm... so I hooked up my 360 via HDMI... looks nice, though I can't tell a huge difference. The particular HDMI port can detect PC resolutions too, so I've selected 1360x768. So five strips of pixels are grey, but it's 1:1 mapping. I'm a bit torn on whether or not to leave it like that (pick 720p instead).

Being a total noob to this HD game... I've switched my Sammy back down to 720p from 1080i - apparently pushing at higher resolutions affects the lifespan of the set.

How does that affect the lifespan? The panel just scales the incoming signal for proper display. :???:

I think I saw a comment at, of all places, AVS. I'll PM you if I manage to find it again. If not ignore me.

Lots of nonsense goes around all over the net, including at AVS. What resolution you run has no effect on the lifespan of your display.

Picked up the 5084 myself from Amazon last week for about $1800. It's my first foray into HDTV so hopefully it works out. Mostly going to be a mix of HD and SD cable to start with.

Alstrong, any helpful tips on calibration or care in the first few days?

Mainly just the sort of stuff early on in the thread -> set the contrast and brightness to a relatively low level (sub 60 contrast, sub 50 brightness). I watch SD cable with zoom1, so there's some top and bottom cut off, but it fills the whole screen. It's nice that you can actually shift the image up or down though (to avoid seeing static TV station logos).

I found the following site to be quite helpful: http://samsungplasmatvfaq.com/index.php/Display_settings

Right now I'm well above 400 hours of TV usage, and there's virtually no image retention when I'm going through the 360 dashboard.

I'm still interested in hearing a discription of what you are calling "image retention" there, going though the 360's dashboard and such.

Like, I used to see a greyish imprint of the dashboard. It'd go away after watching cable, so it was minor.
