Here's an official PSP thread. Any bickering and arguing members want over the handheld can be discussed here. This thread doesn't mean any other PSP related threads will go away, it just means this can be a central thread where members want to discuss anything PSP.

Keep it clean and fair, here is a little push to get things moving:

Is it confirmed that the disc is (re)writeable, or is that just a wishlist when it is mentioned under the "What other features are you looking forward in PSP" heading?

I sure hope it is rewriteable, and that a computer drive is released that fits in a 3.5" external bay so I can toss this stupid floppydrive once and for all! 1.8GB... Mmmm... :D

*G*

They actually only asked one developer, the guy was schizophrenic though

Seems like the same guy was also the "consumers"

what really would be cool is if they included a WIFI adapter on the handheld.
so you could play really cool online games from within your seat,
or imagin you are going to holidays , just pop into a local HOTSPOT (public wireles internet acces area) and play.
or even when you are at the airport and need to wait a few hours for your flight
or from your bathroom or or ..
 8)

Game Developers
Looking forward - 70.8%
Don't know - 27.1%
Not looking forward - 2.1%
How many developers did they ask in all?

To get 2.1%, at least one developer had to say "not looking forward". Using that, 1/0.021 = 48.

So at least 48 developers, or any number close to a multiple thereof. The actual number probably is much higher, but hey, that's at least 34 developers "looking forward" to PSP...

From the-magicbox.com

"Ken Kutaragi of SCE mentioned that the retail price of PlayStation Portable will be relatively low, because many of the chips used in PSP are already in mass production for use in PlayStation 2."

Means on scaled down CELL in PSP???

Even it it was correctly quoted it would imply a downclocked PS2 chipset, not a scaled down Cell.

Or downclocked EE&GS@90nm?

Touche... now take some pixel pipelines off and optimize e-DRAM ( you want to have e-DRAM for the GPU and also e-DRAM for the CPU of this SoC )...

It'd be very smart of Sony to somehow leverage PS2 tech (ie: EE&GS@90nm) into the PSP, since developers have already spent oodles of money on tools, learning the architecture, etc. Not to mention quick and clean (not dirty!) ports :)

Maybe have a 150mhz EE and 75mhz GS? I'm also assuming that after 4 years, the whole architecture would be cleaned up/optimized considerably as well..

they'd have to tweak it alot to get power consumption low enough . That is the key to a hand held.

Software pricing information revealed…

“Unplugged gaming gets serious with PSPâ€￾ was the message from Sony Computer Entertainment Europe’s president Chris Deering today, with crucial pricing for the software of the new handheld also unveiled.

Deering told attendees to the first Annual ELSPA Games Summit 2003 during his keynote address ‘Future Challenges for Console Platforms’, that games on the Universal Media Disc (UMD) for PSP would be priced, “as high as €50 or €60 no doubt, but probably the mass of games given the time slots these will be played in will be more the £20 range, €20-€30.â€￾

Deering also said films on the UMD would be slightly less than a DVD and music will hopefully be under €10.

Launch wise, Deering reiterated the second half of 2004 date, with every intent for this to be worldwide: “It’s technically possible,â€￾ he said, “but you can only make so many a day, so I would imagine it might be a slight time difference between the Japan launch and, U.S. and Europe. There’s no difference between PAL and NTSC, [although] there will be region codes for movies.â€￾

At the start of his address, Deering emphasised that PSP will not be a direct competitor to Game Boy or Game Boy Advance: “I think it can be in fact synergistic and dynamically collaborative with Game Boy,â€￾ he said. “Maybe it might compete with people on the planes, but in the school yard I don’t think people will be able to walk around with the PSP and treat it as roughly as you do with Game Boy. So it’s trying for a new part of the market to escape the TV, for the shorter leisure time slots that are seeming to be a factor.â€￾

These comments come following a Dow Jones report last week, with a statement from Nokia’s senior vice president of media entertainment Ilkka Raiskinen, saying N-Gage is targeting an older audience with its N-Gage: “Game Boy is for 10-year-olds. If you're 20 or 25 years old, it's probably not a good idea to draw a Game Boy out of your pocket on a Friday night in a public space,â€￾ he said.

EEGS chip is still PS2 chipset - modifying its 'architecture' would make it useless for purposes of PS2 production.
As for PSP use, there'd have to be considerable reworking done on power consumption issues etc., so I find it doubtfull. Plus I want it to be Cell based so :p:p:p

Deering also said films on the UMD would be slightly less than a DVD and music will hopefully be under €10.

So they're planning to sell movies and musics on UMD. This is interesting. I don't mind musics on UMD but movies ? I rather it has a tuner.
