Oddities about PS3

Nah...it's 3 ethernet ports...

Networked PS3's!

Well that's what i don't get... i though an ethernet port was an in&out kind of thing, so whats the difference between the 1 in port and the 2 out ports?

This slide:

It still has it's own SRAM and there's the "SPE" text.
Can't quite make what reads inside it.

My guess is that 1 is an 'uplink' connecting PS3's together....and the other's are for connecting network devices 'off' the PS3...

Like a network switch/hub i.e. where the network switch is the PS3 itself... 8)

I just assumed that was a slide of a 8SPE Cell. The PS3 version will just have the same chip, but with one of them doing its hair while the others churn out the big numbers.

7 controllers apparently because of 7 BlueTooth channels. BlueTooth has 8 channels so I hear, which beggars the question what the 8'th channel is doing?

Maybe it's a shift it KK's aesthetics of twos beliefs? Maybe odd numbers and primes are the way to go? 3 ports. 7 SPUs. 7 controllers. PS3

Maybe he was drunk! :p

Add to that, a router...if the PS3 acts like a router, the CELL network/ world begins to make sense... :devilish:

That slide shows Cell architecture, not specific implementation. The end two SPEs ( I now know the difference between a SPE and SPU which is a good thing!) are faded out, to illustrate more SPE's could be going off into the distance.

In terms of the resolution I agree it was a little fuzzy, the max they offer is 1080p, the best there is, on dual screen it might drop to 720p if both are the same size? Dual 1080p.........would be utterly astonishing. As one of the speakers said, you can have the game (lets say FPS) in HD on one side, and a full fledge tactical chart and communication center on the other monitor to plan and coordinate. Conversely, I've always hated split screen, not because it ruins the asthetics of viewing area as much as it just plain isn't fair to people who suck at games like me who like to sneak around and not have the other guy know what i'm doing just by glancing at another portion of the screen, better to have 2 complete seperate screens turned away. The large dual monitors certainly give some indication of multi screen split screen action too. After all, how are you going to possibly use all 7 controllers at the same time!

Instead of buying 2 HDTVs, you can connect a cheap PC LCD monitor for the 2nd screen via DVI.

Maybe it's a back-dor trick to sell future Cell based HDTVs? Maybe instead of connecting to the HDMI, they connect to the Ethernet and actually process data? :p

Yeah and you get a big black border running down the center of your FOV. ;)

I've heard many artists talking about running into poles and columns in the street because they've got so used to dual LCDs... :D

3 network ports... :?

The only idea I have right now is that the PS3 can function as a router/switch and maybe some kind of mediaserver. Anyone has a better idea how these ports could be usefull? Sony must have some feature in mind.

With 2 multi-taps you get 8 controllers max...but 7 controllers is just plain weird... :?

I was just gonna mention that other oddity... 7? either 6 or 8 would have been easier on my brain... but 7? :devilish:

...and 3....

3 network ports... :?

 Well they seem to be different kind of ports, i still have to understand why one is a plain network port and the other 2 are "internal" network ports... What's the difference?

1 is a WAN port and the other two are LAN ports. I guess this limitation is not really important, but present to make configuring and documenting the device easier. I don't know that the WAN port has any routing features, but I would suspect that it may have its own configuration space in the OS and the LAN has its own (or none, being dumb).

Having two extra ports (LAN) is actually quite nice because you can then attach some other devices without immediately requiring a hub/switch. Attaching any hub/switch to the LAN ports should not pose a problem, but I think we know how complicated this can become for people who know nothing about networking and just want an entertainment device in their living room.

Actually I think thats exactly what Sony is trying. Connect any Hifi-Equipment on a Network, no more different Audio/Video Connections - just everything on a single, digital line. (I doubt HDMI-Slots are going away though).
Also were gonna see how Cells in different Components could help each other.

Ok everybody I'm going to answer a few questions.

or just use the internet

Hey blakjedi what if you want to get on the internet and your brother is on the computer (one computer home) and your dad is watching the TV that your X360 is on. Well that means no internet for you.

But if you had brought a PS3 you could have powered up the machine (not play the game) and jump on a small $100 TV and jump on the internet. It can hook up to regular TVs without HD.

And about this 7 controller thing. Do you guys forget that the PS3 has 6 usb ports. EA could support 5 on 5 basketball with the NBA Live series exclusivly on PS3 of course. ;)

and do you forget that the xbox has usb ports and they can sell a cheap ub for usb and you can have 500 people playing at once ?

Doesn't really matter as i doubt anyone is going to buy 10 controlers .

Not to mention that you have6 people hooked up to usb ports and then another 7 on wireless wehre are you going to fit everyone ?
