nVidia's Jen-Hsun Huang speaks out on X-Box 2 possibility.

Not all IHV's impliment the same features in the same ways. There is very little commonality between the fundimental architectures of each IHVs design - especially I'd assume when designing around a fixed console where you can take things like texel cache or the Hiarchial (sp) Z into account, where each IHV has propietory routines, with diffrent levels stored on on-chip buffers. We'll atleast i'd assume so - If I'm wrong correct me please.

Don't forget, we are also dealing with a next generation graphics chip in the XBox 2. So, it probably won't matter as to how it deals with certain routines and such. It's like a Geforce 4 and a Radeon 9700Pro with handling DX8.1 apps. Though different, the Radeon 9700Pro keeps up with the Geforce 4 and in many cases, outpaces the GF4.

But I would also like to say, that's a very good point. Anyone else have more information to add?

If you want a long overdue, underperforming successor, I could understand..

 Nvidia releases one video card late and you're all over them like it's a bad habit?

Not just Late..
Late, Loud, Oversized, Running way too hot, and no reason to buy it versus the competition.

Uhm, Figgy.. you are aware the 9700 blows the GF4 away in every way.. it keeps up and many times surpasses the Nvidia FX

I am aware of that, just trying to keep people from coming off with a rough response to my analogy. Glad you were gentle ;)

...and doing something once makes a habit? Don't count on it.

but it wont be just once, they missed an entire product cycle, and its still not on shelves, in fact, ATI already has another card to hit shelves soon, and it may even beat the FX, does this once make it a habit or sign of things to come, not really, but being an entire cycle was missed and another gen of card is due out while this one is shipping, then that already makes it a double whammy, one that will be hard for them to catch up to speed on.

a 500gig hardrive ? what are they smoking ? even if they make a 500gig hardrive in two years it would be more expensive than the system itself. I can see a 200gig hardrive ... mabye

Say who? you?? please! no point in reposnding to the rest of what you wrote. problems with a single video card are not enough to be habit formig. plain and simple.

All I can say about that Xbox 2 prototype is, well BS. It's not like you can just open a xbox and drop in a ATi video card (considering the main graphics chip is sodered to the montherboard and also acts as the main memory contorller.). last time I checked the radeon 9700, didn't have the a funtionality. You can't just stick a Radeon 9700 into a Xbox and expect it to work or function.

Not to mention (drivers) to run on xbox or with it's version of the OS. All this xbox 2 he's talking about is nothing more than a prototype PC digital recorder. Which makes sense since MS is also working on a version of windows XP specifically designed for that.

I just want to add sg.: I think that a decisive factor for next gen console will be heat dissipation. I don't think we'll likely find a cooling device ala Geforce FX in a console. Especially since due to the smaller and more compact build of consoles heat is more of problem than in a large PC case.

uhm, one video card coming a complete product cycle late doesnt have to be habit to keep them behind. Not says me, says everyone, get out there and read the reviews, and look at thier previous product cycle, ok, so they are only 6 months behind the Radeon 9700, not so bad, but the R350 is hitting shelves the same time as the Nvidia FX, that puts them two cards behind... by the time they play catch up again, ATI will have yet another card to throw in its face.

This is the part where you act like I'm being stupid or ignorant, or fanboyish about something, and I say, we will talk when you can get back to reality, I just see things as they really are.

CaptainHowdy, you're talking about nVidia as if they were 3dfx and had just delayed the VooDoo5-6000 again... they're not that bad...

The GeForceFX sucks, hands down. Don't count on it becoming a habit. A lot can happen in the graphics industry, and the GeForceFX's delay was mostly because of a single misjudgement on nVidia's part. (going for a 0.13um process that wasn't ready) Although they are behind now, nVidia is still a juggernaut with lots of resources, and they can play catch-up the same way ATi did after their original Radeon was demolished by GeForce2.

All I can say about that Xbox 2 prototype is, well BS.
What you have to keep in mind is that they're already giving developers prototype specs for them to shoot for. This gives the developers a ballpark idea of the capabilities of the system (obviously it'll be quite a bit faster and have much more capability than the early prototypes) so they're prepared for future projects.

500 gigs is a lot, and currently harddrives sizes aren't moving at such a pace to get there. Unless some of the breakthroughs that's currently in research labs gets to production phases it's gonna be a tough thing to pull off and keep the costs down.

I'd think 200 gigs should be more than enough, but ya never know with games like UT taking 10gigs? And wanting to save feature length movies for a Tivo functionality.

Speng.

First of the nv chip in the xbox is between geforce 2 and 3 speed right ? The 9700pro is almost 2 times faster than the 4600ti geforce 4. You know how much faster than a geforce 3 that is ? Now think of what the r400 or r500 will be able to do compared to a geforce 3.

On the fact that the nv30 was late. Yes i think it screwed nvidia more than anyone wants to let on. The geforce fx is about the speed (sometimes slower sometimes faster) than the 325 mhz r300. Ati will be release a chip that runs at 400mhz plus in a month

Well for one thing bbot has changed his oringinal post. Spacegohst2k is NOT a MS road rep. he works in a store and and go tthe information from some MS employee who said he saw this.

not exactly what I'd call reliable.

Also, even if this is a prototype PC, it still doesn't have the bandwidth between the graphics chip and main system memory (AGP) to give them and idea of real performance.

Maybe its like those dev kits that got periodically upgraded until the final version came out? (looks a like a mini tower pc).

Spacegohst2k is NOT a MS road rep.
Actually, he is a road rep. However, he's not given any secret information from M$ nor is he a voice for them. He's had to explain this to people numerous times because they think his word somehow carries more weight than it really does.

Huh? It's been stated many many times now.

The XGPU is between a GF3 and a GF4 in performance. It's closest to a GF4Ti4200 in core speed, with about 2/3rds the usable memory bandwidth.

It IS a GF4, featurewise, (and the Xbox version of DX exposes more of the hardware, so in some respects, it's slightly beyond a GF4 on a PC).

When looking at the GFFX v 9700Pro and discussing the merits of each, the big drawback is that the GFFX was late. In terms of cooling, quieter then a human heartbeat doesn't sound too loud to me, certainly a hell of a lot less noise then the ATi built 9700Pros I've heard. First off, consoles playing with old code means jack shit. Find the most demanding situation you can find and throw it at them, usually synthetics-

The above is running the Code Creatures bench. The highest TV setting is 1920i which in terms of pixels falls between 10x7 and 12x9/10. In that instance even the non Ultra FX holds an edge over the 9700Pro(actually, the edge increases as the resolution is upped). Looking at pure synthetics-
