Nvidia's 3000 Series RTX GPU [3090s with different memory capacity]

The problem is buying a product in a store like any normal person would buy a product in a store? I can see where the actual problem lies now.

The problem is not making enough research before buying a product and doing it blindly based on meaningless trade marks. If this is how "any normal person" does buying then the problem is a lot more severe than just Nvidia videocards I'd say.

In terms of the box design, I think there can be a valid complaint in that if the memory size is part of the model naming scheme that it should be included in the standardized label from Nvidia (or AMD) and not just up to the discretion of the AiBs individual labelling.

For example to illustrate what I mean -

If you look at the bottom right corner of the box, that label with the GPU model (with Geforce RTX and 3060ti with the green design trim) is standardized for all box designs (I'm guessing Nvidia has this as a requirement, AMD also has a one that takes up a corner of all AiB boxes) and if the memory size were part of the model name it should be there.

Otherwise memory size is labled on boxes, but it varies and is up to the AiBs individual box design. In this case it is relatively clear, but it can vary in some cases (for better or worse).

For another example to illustrate, here are two AiB 3080 12GB boxes, as you can see the memory capacity and that they are 12GB models has differing levels of clarity -

So we are seriously entertaining the idea that a videocard should be bought based on the design of it's box now?

No we're entertaining the idea that vendors should accurately label their products so as not to intentionally deceive consumers. :yep2:
As I've said, the memory size is clearly stated everywhere. And in my opinion it provides way more relevant information than a different product name would in it's place.

I don't think this is a question of should or shouldn't they, but what would make sense from a box design labeling best practices stand point.

Nvidia (and AMD as well) clearly have a standard in terms of box labeling that clearly indicates the GPU model, all their AiB boxes use that standard (although interestingly neither of them use it for their own FE/Reference model). This does seem to indicate they themselves also believe their should be some minimal standard of how they want things presented as opposed to everything being compeltely left up to the AiBs. As such if the memory size is an important indcator of the actual GPU model, than it seems best practice wise it should be part of that.

That is up to the consumer to figure out, but at least they'd know there is a difference in the models.
How is this different from two models with clearly stated memory sizes? Are there no difference between them? Or shouldn't costumers figure it out somehow?

It is.

One they're not clearly stated memory sizes imho and two the vendor shouldn't be trying to deceive the customer that the only difference is the memory size...which is what they're doing.
