NVIDIA Tegra Architecture

First really official smartphone with Tegra 4i available in April: Wiko Wax

Notice the dual signal bars, this might be a dual-sim phone.

Looks like the Tegra 4i is going against the 8-core MT6892, though it should have somewhat better CPU and GPU performance (depending on frequencies) and integrated LTE.
This Wiko might be a real contender for my GF's birthday present :)

If they've got dual signal bars but no dual-sim support, a lot of questions should be asked! ;)

Oh, and the "Wiko Wax"?

What a bizarre name! It will be interesting to see how well battery life compares with the very frugal Cortex-A7 chips.

Wiko is a joint Chinese-French operation founded in Marseille, I believe they do some assembly there, and some of the high-level design. Every single one of their handset is dual-SIM and the phones are sold upfront, unsubsidized exclusively. SD storage is there too, even on dumbphones - which have music playback and bluetooth audio, I almost got one.

I'm a bit suprised to see it here on B3D but why not, some of the smaller less-known players get to have firsts sometimes :).

"Rubbish" Mediatek sold 220 Mio SoCs last year and are aiming for 340Mio this year. It might be an idea to troll a bit less for a change especially since NVs market share is still a minority report.

A cynical man might remark that Wiko is an OEM NVIDIA has not yet had the chance to burn. :p

they can sell 1 billions units per quarter and their future products may be better, but until now Mediatek stuff is rubbish.
They don't publish the source code, their support stops at Android 4.2, their GPS is a disgrace, their battery life is pathetic. They only sell their parts because of super-dopper-ultra low prices... period.

Which SoC has open source drivers exactly? It seems to me everything is closed and Android is the new Microsoft Windows (Android itself is somewhat free and open source, but it is the target for most software and mobile hardware support, in the form of binaries and blobs)

Tegra K1 will have open source graphics drivers, but only a best effort provided by the community (nvidia simply provided a few specs so the devs don't have a black screen till they reverse engineer basic display) and so might have awful battery life, lowered performance when run with the open source driver. And I'm realizing this is for "real" linux not Android.

What's the status of security updates?, is it tied to an Android version, or to the phone manufacturer as well.. This is something I don't understand. Staying on Android 4.2 would be fine, if you get five years of updates for the OS and browser (and hopefully some apps). I can understand that in the past old smartphones weren't worth keeping much long (e.g. first gen iPhone, Android 1.x phones) but nowadays a nice smartphone releasing in 2011 is much worth using.

When you install Ubuntu 12.04 you get advertised that you will receive security updates till 2017 (even though it will feel increasingly dated). When you get Windows 7 you know you get them till 2020 and Microsoft may even extend that when finding themselves again in a Windows XP situation.

With an Android version or particular cell phone, htf do I know?
Eventually user bases in the millions will run the risk of being infected by malicious ads or whatever attacks, you could get you personal data, contacts and mail accounts stolen and who knows what.

Maybe the Tegra roadmap thread isn't the right place to discuss this :p. But really, I don't understand and I can't buy into something I don't understand (this hasn't made me as filthy rich as Warren Buffet but well).

I know some people who use phones with the MT6589T and the overall experience is quite satisfactory. They get Tegra 3/Exynos 4410 levels of snappiness using Jelly Bean, and battery life is actually pretty good.
You complain the support doesn't go past Android 4.2? Well neither does nVidia with Tegra 3.

I hope Nvidia follows suit with its tegra note approach, I want a tegra (4i) phone for cheap, Moto G is untouched with no competition on sight for now.
Between enthusiasts in my opinion overestimate the impact of perfs, the Moto G with its A7 does a great job at mostly everything, the most bothering part for lots users of high phones would be the camera quality and it could be a tad thinner. It is a great device, battery life is awesome, the smart cover is a great addition to the phone.

The majority of the above are ill fated lies and exaggerations.

How many cores are in those chinese SoC's? If it's 8 then i agree with them being rubbish.

are you kidding ? I got kitkat on my nexus 7 few weeks after the announcement...
another big issue of all these mediatek products is lack of trim (introduced in 4.3). After some time they all become laggy and unusable...

The Nexus7 is not a smartphone. Now can we get back on topic since we're not particularly interested in your bashing agenda?

Topic is about Tegra. Please remember me what is inside Nexus 7 ?

and what irony that YOU talk about stopping bashing

Only Nvidia bashing is allowed in the thread! Please abide by the rules otherwise you'll be called a troll! ;)

(The trolling argument gets to be used a little too easy for what is just a minor disagreement, TBH.)
