Nvidia reportedly was in talks with VIA Technologies about a possible acquisition, but no deal was made due to the high price named by VIA, according to sources at motherboard makers.

Nvidia and VIA discussed three possible scenarios, including a strategic alliance, acquisition of only VIA's processor division, or the acquisition of the entire company, according to the sources. Though no deal was agreed upon, since VIA continues to see losses, the company is expected to open up negotiations again soon with a lower price, noted the sources.

VIA has denied the speculation about an acquisition by Nvidia and pointed out that the company currently does not have a plan to reduce its capital as recent reports in Chinese-language media have suggested. The company said that its main business is still focused on x86 CPUs and chipsets and therefore will not give up these segments.

Looks like Nvidia might be interested in the CN processor and Centaur's future CPU designs.

Poor NV is despaired all about CPUs lately...

Frankly, if they wanted to develop an x86 CPU from scratch, they would have already.
I'm betting they just want to get their hands on further engineering and patent resources relevant to the subject matter, but the fact that they aren't willing to buy VIA or one of its divisions at any price proves that they're not really that desperate, as some might infer.

Any IP Nvidia could get might help them in the inevitable IP standoff they'd have with the x86 divisions of AMD and Intel.

I'm not too sure about what Nvidia could get from the engineering resources, since VIA's designs have eschewed the high-performance implementations.
The low-power design expertise could be useful.

It would put Nvidia's future product plans on a different path from its competitors, if it were to go that route.
