Jeez, don't you wish this was football*.....and one of them would win, and we wouldn't have to listen to the crap for another year?

*American Football.........not that wimpy, pansy stuff we call soccer

(now we can really get in a pissing contest!!!!)

I am sorry mate, you have no idea what Football is. American Football is for girls. Come down here and play a game of Rugby League/Union and then you will know what Football is all about. Make your Football players look like little children.

Hey, you asked for a pissing contest!

Sometimes I actually wonder whether people get the fact that coming to an all vendors forum will mean that there are people with a differing opinion to their own opinion.
There's a difference between "respectable difference of opinion" and all-out "fan-boyism".

I have nothing against anyone that is pro-ATI-anti-NV or pro-NV-anti-ATI... except when they say stuff that are stupid. Everyone here can be regarded as a moderator, in order to make this forum a place for reasonable discussion (i.e. everyone can voice their opinion if they think someone is being stupid!).

Problem is when one or two participants are the amongst the most vocal, with the majority of their posts appearing as no more than acts of stupidity or blind fanatism. It drags this previously-respectable forum down the drain.

Sounds to me like you're suggesting that these vocal participants should not be given much leeway and their voices hushed when they spout their garbage. I take that to be a call to simply have the thread locked, deleted or noise filtered. I'd kill the poll, personally.

I just think it's funny how people on both sides go out of their way to try to "paint" opposing fanboys as...well, fanboys and point out how biased they are, while still ignoring their own bias. It is kind of annoying when every thread gets turned into a flame war though. Thank god that detonator discussion died down.

Way off topic, but:

Reverend, are you sure you really mean this?

Quite a few threads have gone to hell because someone just couldn't stand the absurd ignorance anymore had reached the point where they had to say it out loud. I can understand the urge/need to try to stop stupid remarks, but it almost always end in a heated fight, where John R has to lock the thread.

That Ignored button would be way cool. Dave?

Rev, sorry to say this, but your complaints seem to only target one type of fanATIc, while totally ignoring the other side. And, if I'm not mistaken, we have bell ringers of both types here. Wouldn't you have to say that makes you appear to be leaning a bit to the BIASED side of the force?

And, as far as that football thing goes......hell, it's more interesting than this ATI vs. nVidia flame war crap......and it's not very interesting.......

BTW, our "children" could "kick" your sissies butts - of course, we do have a lot of protective padding on.....

Hrm, does this mean that nvidia would skip making a DX8 mobile part entirerly? Seriously guys I doubt that the nv31 will be DX9.

I agree, we have bell ringers of both sides. But one side is at least imo far more vocal and annoying. Wouldn't mind if we had less of both though.

If you find one side more vocal and annoying, it probably just means you're sitting a little bit on the other side of the fence. Which is why I find the Nvidiots more annoying, despite the fact the fanATics are just as ridiculous. :D

So true! Preach on brotha'!

Looking at the roadmap posted in the other thread, my guess is that it will likely be DX9, but will be significantly cut down from nv30. The non-mobile nv31 is listed parallel to the GF4MX460, and so I would expect performance to lie somewhere a bit above that range. The mobile part will also likely be a bit slower than the desktop due to slower memory configs, etc.

Can you please explain the last part "which is why i find the.."
And since you said that, wouldn't that by your own logic make you a ATi f... ?

From my position sat comfortably on the fence, the wild speculation. unsubstantiated rumours and blind fanatisim from both sides is pretty darn annoying. Singling out one side alone does nothing but demonstrate your own bias.

Nagorik, I totally agree with you.

Bjorn, Just because you "lean" towards one side - or in some cases just "lean" away from one side - doesn't make you a Fanboi......just proves you are human!

While I personally "lean" away from nVidia, fact is I own 8 nVidia cards and no ATI products....reason being that I try to be objective, and buy the best product to suit my needs. This will change when I replace 2 of my cards for 9700's.

I really don't understand the fanboi thing at all. None of these companys will ever care about you personally - all they care about is profit - and that's the way it is, peroid. In a way, it's kind of like nationalism......only MUCH dumber! My videocard company - right or wrong!
It's like argueing religion.....and we all know where that goes. :devilish:
While I do feel one company does push the bounds of dishonesty, it's purely by degree, and wouldn't (or hasn't) prevented me from buying their products.

Hmmm....maybe Fanboism(?) is just an excuse for thinking? ;) - not too different frome religion of nationalism....just much dumber!

cellarboy, doesn't that hurt?

Just curious, who has singled out one side ?

I agree.

Internal codenames have nothing to do with marketing because they are internal. They may follow a pattern or they may not, and the pattern/scheme may change at any time. Nvidia may switch to a 3-digit codename or abandon numerical naming altogether at any time. Since cards are NOT MARKETED by their codenames, whatever Nvidia calls their chips is completely irrelevant to the consumer.

But to humor this concept for a moment: AMD is a big offender with their K7 codenames. Why is the older Athlon core codenamed Thunderbird while the newer, more potent ones are codenamed after horse breeds? Everyone knows that a huge lightning-wielding mythological bird would make a short work of a horse any day of the week, yet Thunderbird-based Athlons lag behind Thoroughbreds... AMD is really misleading the consumer! ;)

not sure if I should post this here, but elsewhere someone asked what they shoudl buy and here was a response to a 9700 recommendation, it raised a chuckle with me;

'ATI's 9700 is just a wart-hog when it comes to being a Geforce4 Ti beater.

It's a race car only when the following is used:

2048x1536 resolutions, 32bit colour, Anisotropic 64-tap, AA x65535(lol).

Other than that, I personally think it's a crap card.

Sorry ATI.
Go blow some else off (but not me, thanks).'

at least people here tend to argue on their perception of technical merit :)

Actually, I think they're named after muscle cars, though thoroughbred puts a kink in that theory.

Here's a link:

Note that they have NV31 listed as a DX8 part:

kaigai01.jpg

They have a question mark next to the NV31, though who knows if they're guessing about the chip architecture (DX version) , or the number of transistors, or both.

Interestingly, they also have ATI's RV350 also listed as a DX8 part. (Though they have a question mark next to that as well.)

This site seems to show the R350 on some slides, and the RV350 on others. Not sure what to make of it. Reminds me of the "R250 or RV250...what is it?" speculation 6 months ago.
