NPD January 2010

Still better than I thought ! Europe released a few days later I think. The Ravens were waiting for their EU brethen to join earnestly (while SVER walked into Raven's shopping mall-like base to buy grocery).

We have no idea what that 500k means since it's Jack and his usual PR speech. He could very well be talking about MAG number as of now and/or total number of unique users on MAG so far which doesn't scale 1:1 with sold.

 Could be. 500K registered users for a "difficult" brand new MP-only title is a good base to start ! Real life doesn't really need a clean monthly cut off point to build momentum like NPD scores/sales. ^_^

Big big drop for Army of Two. .

never saw what the attraction was the first time. I think the green lighting of this sequel suffered from the first one coming out at the right time when people were hungry for the hype and new games. the game never lived up to its sales first time and this one looks to be not much better.

got some numbers from GAF
Jan 2010 -- Two Weeks on Sale

360 ARMY OF TWO: THE 40TH DAY --- 246.5K
PS3 ARMY OF TWO: THE 40TH DAY --- (?? < 171K)

Mar 2008 -- Four Weeks on Sale

360 ARMY OF TWO --- 606.1K
PS3 ARMY OF TWO --- 224.9K

I honestly didn't expect MAG or Bayonetta to do well. MAG seems to be doing fairly well in Europe though.

Expected a little higher for ME2. The numbers themselves are ok, but with 360 games selling as well as they do, your expectations are always higher.

As Rangers mentioned, I too heard there were some shortages of PS3s. Both amazon and Best Buy were sold out online for the majority of January. I'm guessing the 360/PS3 would've been closer if that wasn't the case. I guess we'll see with the February numbers.

could always be higher but almost 600k in 6 days along side a same day PC version is not bad though. :D

Good to see Army of Two drop. The quality of games, esp this year is waaaay to high for some filler crap like that. The demo was a slap in the face of quality games.

Is it true Mag requires a separate "mag" account to be made in order to play as a different faction in the game?

It's just that you usually see high profile 360 exclusives (or MP games) sell upwards of 700k. But I agree, very decent numbers. I just expected around 700k.

Yes, separate PSN account.

EDIT: At this point, I am most interested in their server performance. How many concurrent users does it support and what's the server spec ? But it belongs to a tech or game thread.

I saw a very interesting graph a couple days ago, which I can't find for the life of me now, that showed that, excluding the Modern Warfare 2 phenomenon (which heavily skews the numbers), the average 3rd party title on Wii sells right around if not slightly more than the average 3rd party game on 360 or PS3.

What for ? Nintendo stands proud and tall on top of Microsoft and Sony. Their hardware and software are selling very well despite naysayers' FUD. The least we can do is to hope they stay diligent and creative. This gen benefits hugely from their contribution. Playing math game here and there won't change that picture.

Even someone as big as Intel is paranoid and keeps moving forward. Ninty should do the same.

Presumably, the publisher might be more concerned about combined revenue on both platforms, per title. The other way to think about is how many sales are lost if they went exclusive... can they risk that.

Comparing apples and oranges. They are different markets and have different characteristics. Nintendo built a new market from the basement up.

I do not think people here realize how difficult it is.

But I mean the publisher is trying to recoup costs and make a profit on a title. They go multiplatform using the same assets, where comparatively the engine is a fraction of the cost... "was it worth it".

Go where you can make even more money, not just "we made money".

Sure, but it speaks more about PS3 and Xbox 360's similarity in target audience.

Wii will have its own momentum. Hopefully Nintendo continues to build on it.

If developers want to make more money, they can learn how to market good games to Nintendo's audience too. The same game may sell on PS3 and 360 as their price drop (i.e., as they reach second and third tier customers). I certainly have budget for casual games for my kid and wife. It may help PS3 and 360 attract new audience too.

Don't give me arcady titles. They can play it for free on the PC these days. Make something worthwhile.

They'll need more money from somewhere if they're going to continue pouring more money into a platform they so far haven't been able to break into as much. ;)

The other problems with adding the figures directly though is the number of titles between the two HD consoles that are multiplatform, what they considered to be third party (Bungie, Naughty Dog, Insomniac... they're not owned by the respective platform owners for which they made their exclusive games), and also ignoring Call of Duty. ;)

I would like more substantial numbers from them. e.g. The Top 10s released indicate the PS3 would have to be doing substantially better across the board in terms of non-top sales as the 360 3rd party sales are usually 30-100% better. They essentially are saying the 360 has more titles selling, and is besting the PS3 at the top, but the PS3 is kicking but on the all the stuff we don't see. Likewise, seems they are counting titles instead of $.

Then it's a problem of the developers/publishers. If they can't market good Wiimote games, how do they know they can market Natal and Arc games ? ...unless they are selling to the same people (read: us) again.

The new casual customers may still end up with the platform holders, instead of third parties.
