NPD January 2008

It's not meant to be a troll, it's how I see it.

If people are buying PS3 games, I'd love to see the sales numbers to back that up. Month after month, theres little to no bestselling PS3 games. Every time we see platform sales numbers, PS3 are way in the back too. I don't think it's a troll to argue that there's a huge number of people primarily using their PS3s as Bluray players (I'm one of them).
they're not "way at the back"... generally, multiplatform titles sell roughly half of the 360 version (more or less). how can you compete with other consoles that have ~2.5x the install base? and comparing it to the 360, which we all know is a software selling beast, are the PS3 software sales really that bad? i don't think you're trying to be a troll, but i think your expectations of PS3 software sales are far too high.

I dunno, I never noticed the high PS2 numbers before. PS2 outselling 360 which has not happened in ages makes me wonder if hardware wasn't way up across the board and 360 and Wii wasn't supply constrained much more than I'm thinking. Now I'm wondering if 360 might have pulled a 450k month or something otherwise. Eh, OTOH handheld sales were nothing special, which may or may not discount that theory..then again handhelds were probably sold out too.

Basically I'm wondering if there wasn't tremendous demand for everything, but only the PS3 wasn't supply constrained. Again the PS2 sales being so much higher than usual are the clue that makes me wonder.

Which if that was the case Wii probably could have done 600k..and basically we're seeing staggering numbers all around.

I have now edited in PS2 sales, they were 264k and higher than 360 which is very unusual.

MS NPD PR with a little bit of shortage talk. No Nintendo or Sony NPD PR spotted yet.

"Our retailers are telling us that Xbox 360 is selling as fast as they can restock, but due to this high demand, Xbox 360 is experiencing temporary shortages. We are working as quickly as we can to replenish inventory," the company said in a statement.

Microsoft also outlined some of the Xbox 360 highlights for its business in the January period:

* In January, $297 million was spent on the Xbox 360 platform (hardware, software and accessories combined), compared to $244 million on Wii and $219 million on PS3. (U.S. NPD, January)
* $159 million was spent on Xbox 360 games alone in January compared to $131 million on Wii and $80 million for PS3. (U.S. NPD, January)
* Total customer spending on Xbox 360 life-to-date now reaches nearly $8.6 billion; this is more than double PS3 and Wii combined. (U.S. NPD, January)
* Six of the top 10 best selling games in January are on Xbox 360's platform. (U.S. NPD, January)
* After five months on the market, Halo 3 continues to make the top 10 best selling games list according to NPD with 127,000 additional units sold in January. (U.S. NPD, January)
* Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare on Xbox 360 was the number one selling game across all platforms for the third month in a row. In January, the fourth edition of Activision's acclaimed war game sold more than 331,000 copies on Xbox 360 and outsold the PS3 version by more than 2:1. (U.S. NPD, January)
* Music fans love to jam on Rock Band and Guitar Hero III on Xbox 360! The Xbox 360 version of Rock Band sold more than 172,000 units in January and ranked fifth on the top 10 best selling games according to NPD. Rock Band on PS3 failed make it into the top 25 list for January. (U.S. NPD, January)
* Third party publishers made 61 percent of their retail revenue, this generation, on Xbox 360 compared to 20 percent on Wii and 18 percent on PS3. (U.S. NPD, January)
* Xbox 360 has 83 titles with a Metacritic review score of 80 or higher compared to just 42 for PS3 and 14 for Wii.

that kind of proves my point, no? are PS3 software sales really that bad?
btw, NPD US LTD numbers are:
360 - ~9.31m
PS3 - ~3.52m

I haven't checked(verified) it yet but supposedly sonycowboy showed on neogaf(my user activation's pending :cool:) that overall ps3 owners relatively are buying more software than either 360 or wii owners for the month of january, If I read correctly.

also, looking at other countries (in europe for example) where the ps3's install base is (at least right now) comparable to the 360's, the PS3 generally sells more software.

I find it stunning that both MS and Nintendo can have shortages 26 and 14 months into their lives respectively. Whoever does their forecasting needs to be taken out the back and beaten :LOL: Seriously, what a way to lose face.

As for software... what, is this the third month COD4 on 360 has been #1? Amazing performance, and I'm sure it's far better than most expected given the competition that's out there.

What I also find interesting in that with obvious Wii and 360 shortages, the numbers across all hardware seems extremely high for a January month... it really shines on just how big this industry is getting, and how many platforms can genuinely be supported thanks to this growth. This is good news for everyone. One console future? Ha!

Your math is deeply flawed. It's not even about numbers. It's all about the list.

As long as Burnout PS3 stays out of top 10, there is no way in hell PS3 owners on average can be spending more than 360 or even Wii owners.

Seriously though, relatively strong PS3 software sales can be explained by apparently significant contribution of new owners, who -in numbers- happen to be more than the other console's. So nothing to worry about. ;)

i never said PS3 owners are spending more than 360 owners, did i? my numbers are facts, so i don't see how they are flawed. i did not put out any numbers of my own, nor did i come up with any conclusions. all i did was post the facts, attempting to show that the PS3's software sales aren't as bad as people say, but actually pretty good (relatively speaking).

I have a theory about why the 360 is having shortages. MS probably did anticpate some level of demand, but they haven't worked through all their build quaility issues so a lot of units are used to replace the defective ones. Here's a story on their failure rate.

One problem with this is that its generally a small number of people that buy most of the games. I am pretty sure that the PS3 is doing worse sw #s even when compared to the 360 at the same time.

;) and as always and obviously in the rest of the world. The tide is turning, if this keeps up they'll have eaten MS base advantage by next year at the latest.

what?

just the past 6mos show us this...

August: 131K PS3, 277K XBox 360;
PS3=0.47*XBox 360
September: 119K PS3, 528K XBox 360;
PS3=0.225*XBox 360
October: 121K PS3, 366K XBox 360;
PS3=0.33*XBox 360
November: 466K PS3, 770K XBox 360;
PS3=0.605*XBox 360
December: 797K PS3, 1m26 XBox 360;
PS3=0.633*XBox 360
January: 269K PS3, 230K XBox 360;
PS3=1.170*XBox 360

360 outsold PS3 by 463,000 in Dec alone... PS3 outsold 360 by only 39,000 units ONE time since they launched in 15 months and now you extrapolate that they will "close the gap" by 2009? :smile:

oh and this NA only which is what I assume you are referring to since this is an NPD thread.

Dammit, this is turning out to be a huge pain in the ass. I already have a 2nd 360 as a dev kit, but we went looking today with some coder friends for them to get 2nd 360's as devkits (they are helping me with an xna project), and after checking 8 stores we couldn't find them anywhere. Target, Best Buy, Gamestop, Frys, Costco, etc, not one 360 to be found. This is ridiculous. I guess they will have to prototype the game on the pc :(

And if you take a look at the number of people that keept saying that the PS3 isn´t and never was important for Blu-Ray Playback you begin to come close circle..
