NPD February 2007

I was hoping 40-45k a week for PS3. If these numbers are true then that just proves the price is too high and the not enough driving software (duh I know).

I don't doubt these may be the numbers (though as always confirmation desired), but they're not surprising either.

I sometimes worry about the people that get *shocked* about every data point they see around here - I fear for their critical thinking abilities. February was a slow month for PS3 game offerings, the console aint cheap, and the competition was strong; not much reason for someone who didn't feel inspired to buy it in January to have come off the fence in Feb. Anyway, I'm interested to see what post-March 23rd numbers start looking like - I think the new firmware should offer a fair bit of appeal. Other than that, it's just waiting for 'killer apps' to be released, be they games or whatever else.

I'm happy with what I've been shown this month though in terms of PS3's future... happy enough that I really don't care if it gets doubled-up on in sales right now. But it's that very satisfaction I'm feeling with what I've seen, that I suspect eventually will translate into PS3 sales to others as well down the road. I mean even for those who choose to be partisan in the war, you gotta admit PS3 looks better now than it did a month ago, even if not on a personal level.

All that aside... good performance by Wii and 360 - I respect your achievements.

XBD - I see where you're coming from and in the Jan time frame you predicted very well prior to those numbers. While in that thread you said you did not predict the first 6 million ps3's to sell-out no problem a year ago, I did not see you defending those that questioned ps3's ability to sell at that level either. {raises hand}

I didn't see your prediction for how well you thought ps3 would sell in February, but I'm guessing this was in line with your predictions. So my question to you is: Do you think this <150k/mo rate will be typical for ps3 this year? Why or why not?

If these numbers are correct ... well let's just say it will be a long year at Sony HQ. Good news for them is Japan ps3 sales picked up to 50k last week and EU launch is around the corner.

edit - you answered you predicted 200-250k. Do you feel this level will be maintained and this month is a blip or will the <150k/mo level be the norm?

Ok I'll respond here quickly, but then it's off to eat. :p

No, I wouldve thought PS3 do about ~100k better than this, but that like all things was just based on precedent and arbitrary criteria. Jan was the only 'normal' month of sales precedent, so of course not seeing anything stand out comin for Feb, I assumed something similar to Jan would happen. Well, I should have guessed lower! ;) But then again, I see why it *would* have been lower also; ie the aforementioned barren landscape that was February.

Obviously less than 150k a month for the year would be terrible - no disagreement there. And this was a bad month, no disagreement there either. But I don't think PS3 will be consigned to this forever. I don't like making predictions based on 'too little information' mind you, but I'll go ahead and give a guess as to what I think will happen tis year when I return from eating. And that's a guess I'll alter on the 23rd after I see what the firmware has, and of course slowly also along the course of the year as more things become known.

Well if it's any consolation for Sony the PS2 outsold Gamecube and Xbox combined 12-1 ;)

Time to chop that price Sony.

I would like to see how they damage control these numbers. These numbers would see the 360 outselling PS3 in (NA + Japan) markets. I doubt they even care...

Wii is gone, over the hill and never to be seen again. Still supply limited, It's gonna catch up and surpass the 360 very quickly.

As I said, I can't believe the clusterfuck the PS3 is. It's pretty much dead. I hope third parties realize this ASAP or this "next gen" will turn worse than it already is.

agreed, however, when 360 does it's price drop it should be a little closer I'm guessing, as price seems to be a factor

EU can save them.

US ... ehh .. not too sure.

Japan ... they sold 50k the other week so if they can get some compelling software that region has shown a open mind to the platform. I'm curious how that market will react when FF comes out. Then again I'm sure the boys at SE are too ... not sure that's a good thing.;)

Total February PS3 sales Japan + NA = 219k

Does this mean Japan maybe not as big of an issue? It's Wii land for sure. I think Sony's real hope is Europe however Wii is selling well there too.

EU can save them.

well in the larger scheme EU should bail them out (we will know soon if this is true) but this is more or less trending as many had predicted... MS wins NA, Nintendo JP and Sony EU. Although MS needs a price drop soon itself to stay ahead of wii in NA :D and Nintendo could take EU as well.

It's more like "Nintendo wins all" so far.

Indeed ;)

EU can make up the difference and prior to a few months ago I thought for sure EU WOULD bail them out. However after a few recent events/comments regarding ps3's likely reception in the region I'm not as confident as I was that Sony would take the region. I still think they can though if they play their cards right.

The entire region seems to be Sonyland in a similar vein as Japan is anti-Microsoftland.

The US is an odd one. I thought MS would do well vs ps3 but I did not honestly figure that the Sony diehards in this region would be so limited with their wallets.

I pin it on a previous post I had regarding ps3 acceptance in the US:
The internet.

News travels fast these days and the more expensive your product the more likely people will research it before purchase. Research on the ps3 has returned less than favorable results up to this point. Not to mention many are being drowned by the screams of glee from the Wii faithful.

Unbelievable numbers for sure for ps3 in the US and Japan but perhaps the Sony Soldiers in EU will pick up the slack for the rest of the world.

good for Crackdown (it deserves it IMO) and Guitar Hero II for 360 releases April so that should keep 360 software interesting as well.

they're not ahead yet in NA but it is trending that way which is why a 360 price drop could change that (or at least keep it interesting)

yep.

It's funny, I was upset at Sony initially for pricing the ps3 so expensive as it delayed a price cut last fall and now ps3 is underperforming at retail and it's stalling a price drop again for xb360!

Hopefully MS realizes their position in the market longterm and drops around May. Perhaps a core pack-in with Forza2 ... the timing is perfect.

true

this news is best for those making the pricing decisions for 360. they now have options that I'd imagine are beyond their wildest expectations 2 years ago WRT taking advantage of cost scaling (due to more time) bundles or price drops.
