NPD December 2010

Not quite. NPD Nov @400K and Dec @560K

However, it's a European game far more than a US one, and it's here that PD are going to make real numbers.

Ah ya I missed the update with the GT5 numbers for this month. I recall past GT games doing better in the US, I suppose that's down to ps2 vs ps3 popularity in the US.

Sometimes PR guys really have to earn their dollars when putting a positive spin on a potentially less than positive situation. However, That said, talking about review scores for a January game that's not even in stores yet as one of the two key highlights while discussing the December 2010 NPD shows some real balls ;)

Well, the increase YoY for Software sales is definitely a positive for them, so kudos on that. Sticking LBP2 in a PR statement reaction to NPD release is, um, yeah, they've got some balls there. :D

And I especially like the following quote...

PS3 is perhaps the only console that grows more valuable over time.

Uh... What? They have the balls to say that after the incredible consumer reation to Kinect the past two months? Implication being that X360 didn't grow more valuable with the release of Kinect. Big hairy balls indeed. :)

Though he doesn't state it, I'm pretty sure those are "from launch" and not "December NPD" figures.

Well, Epic Mickey (single SKU) hit 1.32 million at number 6, so depending on where in the top 10 those two Kinect titles hit, one or both or none of them might have hit 1 million in December, which would be quite remarkable. But I'd agree, it's far more likely that it's 1 million lifetime and not 1 million for December.

[EDIT] Duh, you're right they absolutely had to be 1 million since launch, as the number 10 combined sku sold only 906.4k units. So they each had to sell less than that but more than 560.5k.

Of course, that also underscores just how well at least 3 titles on Wii did with Just Dance 2, Donkey Kong, and Epic Mickey all moving over 1 million units.

Uh... What?

I like the word "perhaps" in there. It's one of those strong, positive words that rallies the troops!

But anyway, maybe he's referring to it "perhaps" becoming the new darling of the homebrew scene? ;)

Oooh, low blow. :) And I'd assume the perhaps is a way to vacillate between appearing to be an imbecile and using strong confident wording to rally the troops. :D

Just to make things even:

2010 was the Biggest Year in Xbox History

The launch of Kinect and the debut of blockbuster games such as “Fable III” and “Halo: Reach,” propelled Xbox to the biggest year in its history in 2010. As announced at CES last week, Microsoft ended the year with 50 million Xbox 360 consoles sold worldwide since launch, 30 million active Xbox LIVE members, and 8 million Kinect sensors were sold in just the first 60 days on the market.

December 2010 NPD highlights include:

· Xbox 360 was the only console to show year-over-year growth at 42%, making it the fastest-growing console in 2010. (Source: NPD Group, December 2010)
· With $6.2 billion spent at retail, more money was spent on Xbox 360 than any current generation console in 2010. (Source: NPD Group, December 2010)
· December Xbox 360 console sales remained strong, with 1.9 million units sold, our biggest month ever in the history of Xbox 360. (Source: NPD Group, December 2010)
· During the month of December, three of the top ten console game titles were for Xbox 360 including: “Call of Duty: Black Ops,” “Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood,” and “Kinect Sports.” (Source: NPD Group, December 2010)

In order to keep up with holiday demand in December for Xbox 360 and Kinect, Microsoft pulled units from its January and February production. Despite this, Microsoft still experienced out of supply situations in late December, and it expects supply constraint to continue in January and February as it works with retail and manufacturing partners to expedite production and shipments to replenish the channel.

With the most anticipated title of the year, “Gears of War 3,” new Kinect entertainment experiences like Hulu Plus and Avatar Kinect and more several surprises to come, 2011 will be another banner year for Xbox 360.

That last part highlights the paucity of 360 exclusive titles due in 2011, especially compared to the excellent range on the PS3.

Lastly, Nintendo:

NINTENDO NEWS: NINTENDO EMERGES WITH TOP-SELLING SYSTEMS OF 2010, LOOKS AHEAD TO NINTENDO 3DS

Jan. 13, 2011

Great games, great experiences and great value led Nintendo to finish 2010 with the two top-selling video game systems in the United States. The Nintendo DS™ family of systems finished in first place with more than 8.5 million sold in 2010, while the Wii™ system topped all home consoles with more than 7 million sold, according to the NPD Group, which tracks video game industry sales in the United States.

Nintendo sold more than 2.5 million Nintendo DS systems and more than 2.3 million Wii systems in December alone, bringing their lifetime U.S. sales totals to more than 47 million and more than 34 million, respectively.

With the new Nintendo 3DS™ system set to launch in the United States in March, Nintendo has strong momentum heading into 2011. Nintendo 3DS lets users view 3D images without the need for special glasses. More information about the system will be made available during a Jan. 19 preview event in New York.

"Nintendo has sold more game systems than anyone else for five years running," said Charlie Scibetta, Nintendo of America's senior director of Corporate Communications. "Of the quarter billion hardware systems sold in the United States during the past 10 years, Nintendo sold more than half. We look forward to bringing fun new experiences to consumers when Nintendo 3DS launches in March."

Three of the top five best-selling games of December play exclusively on Nintendo systems. These include Just Dance 2 from Ubisoft at No. 1, Donkey Kong Country Returns™ from Nintendo at No. 3 and Disney Epic Mickey from Disney Interactive Studios at No. 4. For all of 2010, 13 of the top 25 best-selling games play on Nintendo systems. This includes two of the top five; five of the top 10; and nine of the top 15

Funnily enough, I think Nintendo will be most disappointed with December. After quite a difficult year in the US sales wise, there was a lot of talk about the sales potential of the Xmas period. While they outsold both competitors, dropping 1.5m Wii sales from the same period last year must hurt bad.

Which is probably why there is a lot of focus on the last 5 and last 10 years in the press release. Admittedly, those are some truly staggering numbers though.

Do you guys think Christmas is an especially casual friendly time for games? I mean Nintendo has been doing extremely well during the Christmas season for 4 years running now...While Sony's offerings, including the Move, have always been targeting the non-casual crowd. MS had a breakout year because Kinect is far more casual friendly, and what better time to release it than Christmas, when people who don't normally spend money in video games go to the stores to buy stuff.

Not very usual to see a PC-game in NPD's list. I don't think NPD count's the online sales from for example Steam or Blizzard Store?

So how likely is it that X360 was supply constrained in the US? Anecdotal evidence indicates that Kinect hardware has definitely sold out everywhere here in Hungary but consoles were still available.

I wonder if the Xbox 360 would have outsold the Wii had it had more supply? The Nov / Dec differences between the two consoles is quite staggering.

MS reports that its the only console up YoY. This leaves PS3 at less than 1.21m for december.

I think his comment was based more on the NPD statement that the 360 was the only console to achieve yoy growth in 2010 as a whole. For the PS3 to join that club, it would have had to sold more than 121.1K in December according to NPD figures for the previous 11 months.

yes anecdotal evidence shows that it could have done better in NA had it not been mostly sold out in last week of Christmas season
