actually I dont undersatnd the whole thing, why buy it then?, its like faceplates for a telephone, why? u spend cash 'expressing your individuality' by buying something that has been mass produced in china.
um can someone enlighten me how that makes sense.
cause it speaks to me not as individuality but toolness.

very bad numbers for MGS4 after the initial numbers (where initially u sell to ppl who brought it on hype) its done terrible, LittleBigPlanet OTOH (whilst the numbers havent been as much as sony would of liked in the states) has remained constant ( a sign of a good title). similar to COD XXXX it keeps on selling, which I cant understand, ... its a wellknown franchise FFS

Nobody got it. In both meanings of that sentence. I'd expect they eventually sold them simply because of the shortages they had that holiday of the pro model. I still remember when the SKU was unveiled at a press conference that the presenter paused for some kind of crowd reaction and got.....crickets. Priceless.

Battered by slumping sales and a strong yen, the Japanese electronics and entertainment company expects to sink into a 150 billion yen ($1.7 billion) net loss for the fiscal year through March, a reversal from 369.4 billion yen profit the previous year.

pretty bad news for sony. Hopefully they can turn this around but who really knows

Would seem to not be good news for a price cut..some despondent comments on GAF are saying the next PS3 reduction will be "never". Might be a good while anyway.

01 Oct 08 - 31 Dec 08
360: 6m
PS3: TBA

Comparisons

Last Quarter (01 Jul 08 - 30 Sep 08)
360: 2.2m
PS3: 2.43m

Year-On-Year (01 Oct 07 - 31 Dec 07)
360: 4.3m
PS3: 4.9m

got any numbers to back this up ?

Second paragraph:
Client revenue declined 8% as a result of PC market weakness and a continued shift to lower priced netbooks. However, strong annuity licensing drove Server & Tools revenue growth of 15%. Entertainment and Devices revenue grew 3% driven by strong holiday demand for Xbox 360 consoles with a record 6 million units sold in the quarter.

Unless the PS3 and PS2 numbers are ridiculously larger than predicted, this will be:

- The second time the 360 has outshipped the PS2 worldwide in a quarter (of 13)
- The third time the 360 has outshipped the PS3 worldwide in a quarter (of 9)

Both of those include Oct-Dec 06, when the 360 overshipped 4.4m units (and shipped 500k and 700k units in the following two quarters in rebalancing).

Great news for Microsoft.

EDIT: Unless of course it's another overshipping, but we won't know that until April.

Oct-Dec 08?

Something doesn't add up: 6m units shipped Oct-Dec.

NPD says 2.6m sold in the US Oct-Dec.
Media-Create says 133k sold in Japan Oct-Dec.
Microsoft claims 2m shipped to Europe, Sep 22-Jan 05.

There are alot more places in the world. In addition companies like Walmart and Toys R US do not report their numbers to NPD.

Might as well drop this here..some new information from the rumor mole at Ars Technica..Red Xbox 360+RE5+SF2 HDR coupon+RE5 theme incoming..no word on price or sku. I think it would work best as a $249 Arcade..

Seems reasonably cool..another thing that might stimulate sales a tad.

65% the size of Europe/10x the size of Japan?!

Apparently. MS isn't making those numbers up, one assumes.

I'm not sure where that guy a few posts back got his MS said they shipped 2m to Europe between Sep 22- Jan 5 info. I assume it's valid, but I've not seen that.

Other markets, Canada is generally nearly 10% of USA sales, could account for nearly 300k of those missing 1.3m consoles right there, Mexico is supposedly actually a pretty decent market (had sold 500k+ 360's according to info some time past). Australia (have not kept up with sales figures there recently). Maybe the Middle East? Taiwan, South Korea, New Zealand, even Russia has been tossed about occasionally in sales figures from the big 3. Plus every other country not in Europe/Japan/USA and that I haven't mentioned. I wont deny it seems hard to find 1.3m consoles, just throwing things out there.

i saw this at engadget who is also reporting that the demo is coming out first for the 360 for the usa

I don't mean to imply that they are. The question stemmed from whether they had overshipped or not.

That was me, and it comes from the never-shy Microsoft PR. We get updates when they hit shipping milestones. Maybe it doesn't get much coverage in the US where NPD is everything :D

Canada is a good shout. Australia is about 500k LTD (as of late December), similar to Mexico if your numbers are right. This is of course assuming that every console shipped in Europe was sold as well.

As I said, we will only know when Jan-Mar shipped figures are released in April. To me 6m looks to be a bit beyond what market sizes and sales figures suggest, by something like 0.5m-1m.
