Launching in the US first would be... interesting... Not sure it will happen, they are a japanese company and the way it's always worked is Japan first, the rest when we can.
Except for DS, no? Was that US first, or US+Japan simultaneously?

Pretty sure it was Japan first, then US shortly after.

DS launched first in US on November 21st and two weeks later in Japan.

Oh right. Well i'd consider that a "simultaneous launch" more or less.

Not gonna happen with platforms like PS3 or X360. DS was a little thing that's easy to manufacture in the millions, it's obvious that the problem arising from manufacturing things like the next gen consoles will make it very difficult to have millions upon millions of units ready for launch.

true .... but they are cheaper to make :)

The 128KB socket 754 semprons might be even cheaper to make.
And if not, how about some 64KB semprons?(assuming the cache is removed and not just disabled)

It's amazing to think that the last two generations Sony led the console market without the most powerful console.this will be the first generation where Sony clearly leads the competition technologically. It also appears that Sony will once again have the only platform to ever maintain dominance across generations!

and this is the greatest threat to the competition: most power.
Xbox and Cube both thrived on being more powerful it was even Xbox's main advertising point. everyone that bought a Box will tell you it was because of power. so what do you have if the main advantage is taken away? online? well, every console will be online.

for PS3 it has every domain secured; dev support, brand recognition, userbased, diversity, power, multimedia, etc.

it is a very tough up-hill battle for the competition indeed.

Agreed. I feel like Sony threw the kitchen sink in the PS3 not because they could afford to, but because MS is very serious this time they could NOT affford NOT to. 8)

I get the impression Sony were going for a finishing blow, not just in a powerful system but also forward thinking to their next consoles. I wonder how it'll pan out?

I was watching the news yesterday, one of the biggest news channels in the German area had talked about the next console generation for maybe two minutes and in those two minutes they gave the advice "better wait for the PS3" not less than three times. The mass market does not scan the gaming boards to find out witch one is more powerful, they listed to the media and the media just decided to love the PS3 and not the xbox 360 over here.

Perhaps that's actually what they DID do? If they don't research the consoles, they'll recommend PS on account of the brand. If they do 'research' they'll hear PS is the most powerful, so recommend it. Apart from saying 'look at the consoles and buy the one which appeals to you' there's not much advice they can give that's a little one-sided.

Personally I'd say that's fair anyway. Everyone should wait 'til all three are out before making a choice, unless they're the sort of gamer who wants all consoles. I certainly wouldn't want to buy PS3 only to see Revolution is more my cup of tea and I've wasted my money.
