I'm curious, why can a CAV drive be slimmer than a PCAV drive?
Full height drives have a mechanical limit of 10000 RPM, which is 12x CAV for bluray.
Slim drives (laptop), have a limit of 5000 RPM, so it's 6x CAV.

The problem with PCAV (partial CAV) is it's allowed to exceed 5000 RPM to keep a reasonable bitrate in the inner half of the disc, and a constant bitrate in the outer half.

Another concept, by gaffers

Looks like a building from a sci-fi world. It does match up with the large rectangular box thing sitting on top of a smaller rectangular box theme that PS2 and 3 had.

More news... Polyphony do have a PS4 version of Gran Turismo 6 in mind, and Sony explain why Gran Turismo 6 won't be on PS4 at launch, but later.

I think Gran Turismo 6 as a launch date exclusive for the PS4 would provide a lot in the way of sales though.

Even so, I believe it would be unfair to Polyphony since they would have to work under pressure to get the game done, and that's not their usual approach.

This model has some similarities compared to Xbox One. What about this one?

That one's pretty tasteful IMO. But that's not what the teaser suggested. the teaser suggested something horrific.

It seems that, for the first time ever, there will be a worldwide launch for a Sony's console. Sorry Americans, but this is what Europeans have been waiting for for generations:p:
I wonder if that was part of the design decision? Sony tried a WW launch for PS3 but were scuttled by difficulty in fabricating. The conventional design of PS4 not only benefits developers, but also production and sales. The limiting factor to manufacturing rate is probably the 8 GBs.

I wonder if Sony are feeling the gamer's internet vibe and are going to back a significant push for early dominance? They must be wanting another PS1/PS2.

way too small if Xbone is any consideration...considering PS4 packs more paper flop too.
The golden rule of heat management: Inexpensive, Small, Silent... pick two ;)

MS have never been innovative with heat management, they went very safe this time around. But it should be very silent and very low cost, the compromise is obviously the size, and the non-stackable design (would obstruct the most important air path)

My guess is that Sony will go a bit more expensive to have it smaller, they have a lot of experience with efficient heat sinks, whether they want to take that kind of hit on the BOM is the big question.

The fat PS3 was labelled horrific when it was shown, now some people seem to think it looks great.

The Ferrari Red Phat PS3 looks stunning. I passed by a game store in Asia and almost walked off with one back.

My opinion isn't going to change. ;) Unless the impression given by the teaser was wrong. But all those angles was so 1980's.

It reminds me of a lawnmower. :)

I'm trying to imagine how the box should look between the new PSEye and DS4, it seems that it's going to look like a slab of granite. :runaway:

I don't care how big it is, I want that sucker to be quiet without overheating. It seems we are so far off from the PS2 Slim days. That thing was beautiful (then again, the original PS2 had a ton of empty space for the rarely used 3.5" hard drive.
