News & Rumours: Playstation 4/ Orbis *spin*

The idea of F2P i to get players hooked so they will spend money, it makes no sense to limit your consumer base by putting it behind a pay wall.

So what exactly will you get for paying to play online on PS4 vs. PS3?

Are they going to have servers or is it going to be a P2P scheme?
FPS, RTS, Racers, etc... all the normal games, I don't know I assume the servers are Sony's, so an ongoing infrastructure cost for it's maintenance.

MMOs are probably outside of it because they are managed by the publishers infrastructure, and the business model isn't the game sale itself, but rather a separate subscription, or free to play with micro transactions.

So they would have a dedicated server for a 1 on 1 game of FIFA?

Or a dedicated server for each match of BF4 or COD?

No idea, I'm just guessing
P2P is a security risk, you end up knowing the IP address of an opponent (sniffing the connection). I don't think they'd allow that.

Looks like they are trying to make the existing UI catastrophe that is known as the PSN store into the core interface for the PS4. Also, looks like they may be gimping video sharing as the examples are not full rez and do not appear to support full screen (at least there does not appear to be any control for that). Personally, I was hoping for an integrated alternative to Twitch.tv. If the video shows truly what we are getting that feature just became pretty much irrelevant to me.

I wish someone would ask Sony what the situation will be with locked saves on the PS4. If I have a second PS4 will I be able to transfer my saves between boxes without having to wait 24 hours?

Cheers

The 24 hour limit only applies to protected game saves as far as I know.

You can transfer the protected save to another PS3 but you won't be able to use it in the game.

We can't tell without a proper OS showcase. Could well be that particular interface to the video is windowed, but just clicking on the video makes it full-screen. Or there's a different interface to view the videos in a different context that supports full-screen. Although not certain, it strikes me as unlikely that Sony wouldn't support 1080p considering 1080p is the standard for HD now and PS4 is going to be around for a few years. Only providing 720p vids seems an odd choice, one that it'd be hard to come to. If you're supporting hardware encoding, 1080p isn't going to add much to the cost over 720p. It's been supported in mobile chipsets for a couple of years now. The only logical reason not to, maybe, is if they sacrifice 1080p res to get 60fps.

Maybe it's about upstream network performance. I hope it's configurable. Few people have good upstream, but I do and I want the ability to crank it up to 11 :D.

For Asia, including Japan:

Although PS Plus has become a popular service in the West, thanks largely to an impressive roster of titles in its Instant Game Collection, in Japan it has yet to really take off.

“As part of the evolution from PS3 to PS4, the services had to evolve too, such as the ability to share video and photos and to save to the cloud – these features are all more advanced than on PS3,” said Kawano when asked about the new PS Plus prerequisite. “This required a capital investment, and so we determined that in order to provide a powerful user-oriented service, it was necessary to standardise PS Plus.”

“I can’t talk about what we have in mind for Torne or Nasne (Sony’s DVR add-ons for PS3 and Vita). But during his appearance on stage at our E3 conference, Michael Lynton discussed Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited. So in terms of TVs that connect with PS4, we’re putting considerable effort into developing features that are even more fun than ‘smart TV’.”

“We’ll have to tailor the content of our video and music distribution services for each territory. I had hoped at E3 to be able to go into more detail about our global strategy; we’ll outline what we have in mind for Japan and the Asia region sometime before Tokyo Game Show 2013.

It looks like Sony will talk about Asian media services before TGS.

If nothing has changed significantly in Sony Japan, I predict a giant disappointment. :p
Kawano's 2 Vita Heaven virtual events s*cked big time.

I remember in one Japanese PS event, all they did was parade their old and stiff executives. Everyone droned about their corporate plans, and then posed with the hardware for a group photo. 8^D

After the flop of Vita, I say good for them! Would be an amazingly strong start for a new generation and a very healthy market revitalisation for the whole industry. Aiming for slightly more conservative specs could be very beneficial and a smarter choice than a monster machine.
They may be well in the way of success, Sony have changed, and not only in the hardware department, but also their staff is different.

To give you an example... (there are lots of interesting quotes in this interview):

Hines told us. “It was more just that when we were talking to the Sony guys, they were super excited about what we’re doing and what we can do together. They wanted to be big part of this. There’s been a big culture change at Sony. The folks that are there now, that we work with, are not the folks that we were working with a year or two ago. Guys like Adam Boyes and the team that he’s put together on the third-party side – which is who we interact with – I think are being super proactive at reaching out to us. They’re saying, ‘we love your games. I played Skyrim for 200 hours. I want to do more with you guys. What do you have going on?' Honestly, Adam was like, 'when can I come out and see everything that you’re making? I want to see everything you’re doing.’ Nobody had ever asked us that before. So just that dynamic is a little different.”

As a fan of Bethesda I know they have had their issues with bugs but I remember people bashing them because they didn't deliver the PS3 DLC on time. I somewhat knew/sensed it wasn't their fault.

The Angry Video Game Nerd Adventures videogame could be released on the PS4.

If it were on the XBLA and came out for the Xbox One I'd buy it, but it depends on certain policies with indies.

Japan is Sony's home turf, Wii U is sputtering, and no one likes the Xbox over there. They are basically taking it for granted, and there's little hope for any disruption over there.

They should care, the PS3 managed to sell about 1/3 the number of units in Japan as the ps2. They still might need some convincing to buy anything at all.

About the 15min share video functionality:

Do we know if it is only available for games? Or is it available the whole time? Say, I stream and watch a cool movie with a crazy scene, can I share it?
