New HDMI Standards and Blu-ray Security Delaying PS3

Speaking of optimisim....February's almost up....

You are the most cynical person on the board IMO...

Your forthright cynicism convolutes your ability to be purely neutral IMO. I admit I hope for the best, which I guess would make me a little less than neutral...that's why my chart makes sense and yours does not. :devilish:

But this silly argument tires me. Let's let it die.

Interesting thing in a Business Week article today about Blu-ray and this whole PS3 speculation ordeal:

Excerpt:

Executives at Sony's PlayStation unit also risk testing the patience of their colleagues on the consumer electronics side of the company, who say plans for Blu-ray are on schedule. Members of the Blu-ray Disc Assn., including those at Sony's consumer electronics unit, are furious at what they call erroneous statements about Blu-ray delays.

Sony in mid-March is scheduled to release pricing and availability this summer of standalone machines, sources say. Meantime, both Samsung and Pioneer have said their machines will be on retailers' shelves in a few months. "We are pretty much on track to see initial Blu-ray products appear as early as May," says Pioneer Senior Vice-President Andy Parsons.

Whether they launch in "spring", I don't know. But it makes sense for Sony to continue to play the "launching soon" card. If they say (in an extreme example), "We can't make 2006. We're launching in 2007", a number of people may just say, "Screw it. I'm not waiting. I'm taking my money and getting a 360."

Nintendo pulled the same card with their previous consoles (they were always later than their projections) to get people excited and make the the fence sitters continue to sit on the fence.

So, really, who knows what's going on internally with Sony. But even if their executives think spring is less and less likely, they won't tell us until it's completely untenable.

So what exactly are they trying to say? Are the Blu-ray Association mad at the Playstation division? Or are both BDA and Playstation division mad at the rumors?

The Blu-ray Association is mad at SCE because SCE is trying to resist commenting on speculation and rumors. SCE know they will have to let the cat out of the bag in some form if they do, and I think they want to wait until E3 to do that. But if they don't squash the rumor outright and justify why, then one might extrapolate that Blu-ray would be late as well, as PS3 would be delayed do to spec finalization issues with the Bluray drive. This pisses off the Bluray Consortium, which is made up of over 128 companies (I think), royally. SCE are in a very tricky position now. Let the cat out of the bag early to appease Blu-ray consortium/media/public at competitive advantage/ marketing effect expense or wait and risk run-away rumors which are damaging in the public's/media's eyes and a pissed off Bluray Consortium.

Catch22 written all over that. MS people must be having parties in their office right about now. Nintendo people don't care for obvious reasons (but are laughing on the inside).

Oh okay cool. Damn to me it's not even that serious for Sony to not comment on the issue. But didn't Sony respond already? I guess it was the SCEA rep that is confusing people by saying that a delay is possible.
