New HDMI Standards and Blu-ray Security Delaying PS3

After sifting through the media and analyst garbage heap, Sony themselves have finally given an answer for what the potential cause of a delay could be, and only a slight delay if it occurred at that. Certain components of the PS3 have not been finalized. They are the new HDMI standard (may or may not be included in the PS3) that KK mentioned during CES and Bluray security, which should be wrapped up very soon.

Sony Spokeswoman:

"We're aiming for spring, but we haven't announced specific regions," a spokeswoman for Sony Computer Entertainment said, adding that some of the detailed specifications of the PlayStation 3 have not yet been finalised, such as those related to the Blu-ray drive and the input and output of video and sound.

"We're waiting for them until the last possible minute, but the launch could be pushed back if they're not decided soon," she said.

Oh god you mean Sony actually said the word Playstation 3!
Now hopefully since ML and the NY Times are speading the absurb lie that the PS3 cost $900 to make and will be delayed one full year, maybe just maybe Sony can respond to that.

Yes it is, it should read as "potential to delay" as opposed to "delaying". Last time I checked, Spring isn't here yet.

Are Sony still aiming for spring ?

I was under the impression it was an October launch now?

Yeah, it's a right pain in the ass that we can't change thread titles anymore, it's so stupid, there is no reason why we shouldn't change the titles of thread we create ourselves, it makes things so much easier!

NO, NO, NO, and NO! Sony is still targeting for Spring.

Allow me to translate what "still targetting for Spring" means:

"If all the planets align perfectly over the next few months, we'll be able to launch on the last day of spring in one region. Otherwise, it's looking more like mid to late summer."

Next day of spring in one region is cool with me.

Sure, but again, that's "if all the planets line up perfectly."

I'm guessing mid to late summer myself. This is just a common sense guess...much like my common sense guess (last month) that there would be no big February Launch event. ;)

i think mckmas meant to say "the last day of spring", which technically is june 21st.

Oh right ok. Yes, we always knew that "Spring 2006" could be anything, and i'm sure Sony will squeeze every drop of spring they have left, if that means releasing at 11.59 on 21st June. ;)

Next day of spring? What the hell am I talking about.

Yeah I hope they get the PS3 out in spring in Japan, just so the forum worlds don't explode if they don't. Need to keep this place calm.

Ah freaky DAMNIT! I hate to say it (and guys you know how hard it is for me) but the PS3 will more than likely NOT I repeat not make the spring time release.

Sources: Sony PlayStation 3 launch delayed until August

David Tseng, Taipei; Emily Chuang, DigiTimes.com [Monday 20 February 2006]

Sony will postpone the scheduled launch for its PlayStation 3 (PS3) game console from this spring until August, as the company is facing several issues with its production plans, especially concerning its inclusion of a Blu-ray Disc drive in the PS3, according to Sony's Taiwan-based contract manufacturers.

I just want to know if certain people on these boards who seemd to take great pleasure in reaming Merril Lynch for their projections...might just want to ask themselves if *perhaps* ML is not as clueless as the "well informed" techno-geeks on this site. ;)

In related news...here we are seeing the potential down side of including bleeding edge technology like Blu-Ray in your game console. To be clear, as the market leader, it still probably made and makes sense for Sony to take the gamble (assuming the delay is only a quarter or so). But I think it's quite plainly obvious on the other hand that it would have been more or less suicide for MS to have tried and include a next-gen disc format in their console.
