New ATI Board: ~2 Months

So, we've just had a "confirmation" of a "leak" of a new ATI board in the next few months. We're told that this will be higher performance than 9800 PRO but the speed won't be realised from a die shrink "on this product". I surmised that this would come from another spin on R350 to increase clock yeilds somewhat and appearantly that was "a fair guess".

So, what do we think they are going to manage to get their 150nm process up to? And what on earth are they gonna name it??

Hype i would say.

I hope for 425/425.

BTW, where did you get the "leak" info from? Are you not the one leaking this? ;)

Perhaps it is more than a clockspeed bump.
To increase the speed it is a possibility that they have further strengthened the design somehow or it is possible that 400MHz+ DDR memory will become 'affordable' to ATI.

It seems to be a direct counter to the NV35. If true it looks like ATI are taking NVIDIA's lead when they had the market (TNT2 .. G400Max ... TNT2 Ultra .. etc). If true it looks like ATI have the balls to go the distance and NVIDIA could be in for a much longer fight than they may have anticipated.

I still think the new Radeon is more than clockspeed increase from the core and has something to do with using much faster DDR memory and perhaps more tweaks to the core to overcome any limitations developers may have suggested in the original R300/R350.

Good info DaveB.. what is the 'other' side saying if anything?

I am not entirely sure this product is necessary. I have a feeling that once they see the NV35 benchmarks they might be content to sit on their asses until the Fall (and save some frickin' money for a change!).

MuFu.

And yea you are the bloody leak! All this 'we' and 'confirmation' ... you are as guilty as a guy with a knife in his hand and the red goo still pouring out from everywhere, shouting out, "I did it! It was me! I chopped the tomato up into a hundred billion bits.."

Or something.

When your enemy is down and unconscious, kick him in the balls really, really hard just to make sure it REALLY hurt. Perhaps you will cause some permanent damage too - Art of Fighting in the Civilised World, Tahir

We will see next week :)

I've never been fond of waiting for stuff to be made public. ;)

Anyway, I really think ATi should concentrate on Loci and not "milk the empty udder of cow" (as we say in Kazakhstan). There was alot of talk about NV40 and the old R400 being technologically pretty comparable and I have a horrible feeling that even if it performs a little better overall, Loci won't stand a chance against the big green marketing BS machine.

I'm sure both companies can play a leap frog if necessary. However, ATI should watch their six. Speaking strickly numbers, ATI does not have the cash to dance such a dangerous jig...

Nvidia will throw down a glove next week. Just how good it is has yet to be seen. 99% of the fanATIcs on this board are already kicking it aside and give the ATI the nod while the 1% nvidiots are in a holding pattern hoping something good shakes out.

Let us wait and see.

Thank God... those guys were really starting to worry me... At least they are going to release it now for sure.

I have been emailing pretty much everyone i know at Ati about WTH They are thinking.

450/460 256mb Ram 9900pro.

On a second more sober thought there is no way ATI can release a higher spec card than the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro only two months after it ships.

An official launch of August for the newer card, and then shipping in September makes sense and is probably what some people are calling the R380/390.

NVIDIA in the world I live in have already suffered. This board reflects the feelings of most consumers in the know whether they are pro/anti/neutral ... ATI is the king of the hill.

The green marketing BS machine has reached a critical mass and if something is not done very soon in what NVIDIA does PR-wise you will see a hell of a lot more 'defection' from loyal NVIDIA fans. There is only so much people will take and already NVIDIA have damaged their reputation to such an extent I believe the OPPOSITE is true of what you stated just now. What I see is people saying ATI cards are great, full stop and I expect this momentum to carry forward at least to the next gen of cards. If ATI deliver again and NVIDIA fail...well lets not go there.

Evil.... how do you justify a comment like this? hype?? Nvidia has been nothing but empty hype for almost a solid year now. The current 9800pro will run at 425 on a majority of boards all day long with stock cooling...

Hype...?? I guess you can wait a little bit and find out whts hype and whats not.

Because Nvidia does it, it justifies the other companies? I prefer that Ati continues its path since july last year. No hype and delivery of great products. Sorry if that's not what you like at the moment from Ati.

So this is confirmation of the 460/400 9900 Pro FIC leaked a few months ago? They might not even need a respin--they could just have been cherry-picking R350's since launch, as a rare and expensive $500 256MB 9900 Pro likely won't sell too many cards. I guess.

ED, this post isn't hype on ATi's part, as the NV30 was on nV's part from November to February. There's a difference between official hype and unofficial rumors, no? (I suppose ATi saying they'd have the performance lead for this year is a bit of hype, but given their performance the past 9 months, I'm inclined to believe them over nVidia ATM.)

ATI has always operated like that... well, starting with the R300 anyway. They never officially announce - or even officially acknowledge - a product until it is about a month away from shipping. That's one of the things I like about ATI, quiet dignity of sorts. Now hopefully nVidia will start doing the same after the complete PR disaster that was the NV30 "launch".

Anyway, one has to wonder where Dave got this "confirmation", and if there is anythign else he would like to add :)

This is fun. B3D should do it more often.

Beats talking about 8FP + 4FX thingy and floating pint renderling frameboffers with a unicorn PS/VS noodle and double-sided pencil butter.

MuFu.
