New 360 Pic (Memory Card)

I'm disappointed to see a custom Memcard type. Portble media would benefit from an existing portable storage. Looks like MS are pursuing an MS own-brand only model in which case they're competing with the likes of iPod.

Plus, from what little we see, it looks rather 70's in style. Chunky GB lump of plastic and not a sleek low-profile storage like everyone's used to in their other flash-mem devices.

Why are people complaining that it's not enough, again?? 64meg is more than enough for a memory card on a console, and who's to say they won't sell bigger memory cards? compare that to the tiny 8 meg memory cards that are basically a standard from all the console manufacturers this generation, this is good news.

Why are you guys comparing this to memory stick and other such memory devices. It's a memory card for a console, not a USB memory stick. It's only purpose is to be plugged into a specific console. Xbox 2 will connect to your PC via nextwork adapter, so if you want to play music from your PC that will be fine, and if you want to copy music to it, you'll need a harddrive.

Well i hope they'll allow for saving games on the PC that's connected to the Xbox2 then.

I get the impression that a PC (with Windows), will act as an extension of XBOX 360.

Ironic how Xbox360 will resemble a Mac a lot more than a PC, but will probably only work with Windows-powered PCs... :D

Can I ask why you think a 64 MB memory card won't be enough to save games? I mean how much space do you think you need for save games?

I'm not saying it won't be enough, i'm saying that if they allow "save on PC" i won't need to buy a mem card at all! Besides, those things are always too small, once you get enough games.
PS2's 8MB ones were supposed to be "more than big enough" but really, 2-3 years in ps2's life and you already had to delete some save games.

Save-on-PC would totally erase the need to buy a MemCard. Which sounds too good to be true in effect, i mean companies make lots of profits out of cables, mem-cards and all those accessories.

Exactly, I don't know why people are harping on about the would-be cost of these things and comparing it to existing media and storage sizes/prices. These are console mempory cards - when has the price on any system ever been anything other than straight-up extortion? ;)

If they were ever to allow just using an SD card or something mainstream like that, that would be a huge revenue stream they would be amputating.

Prior to now there's never really been an alternative to memory cards. With the big increase in digital photography, flash mem tech has rocketed to create small, dense, cheap storage. As a Console memory card offers the same service as SD, CF etc. I think it's a fair comparison, especially if PS3 is to come with MemStick as it's storage solution of choice.

Sony only went with something like the Memory Stick because they have a vested interest in seeing that mode of flash storage proliferate in the market; the more devices that use it, the better. If it wasn't 'their' format, knowing Sony I doubt they would have gone with something like SD instead. Microsoft doesn't have their own proprietary storage format in the larger marketplace, so I think they'll be going with the more typical memory card pricing of the past. I don't see why they wouldn't, either. Memory card sales traditionally are quite the cash-cow, along with controller sales, and I don't see MS feeling altruisitc in that regard when their primary focus this gen seems to be profitability.

Who says the memory card has a proprietary connector? It could be USB, SD, Compact Flash, etc. The shape of the slot could possibly keep current and/or standard memory cards or drives from being used. What's the chances? Probably less than 50%.

Where MS lose out is functionality. I can take pictures/movies on my MemStick camera and chuck it into PS3 and play in the living room. Sony's vision is good, but limited to their format. Adding a multicard reader/writer to XB360 would add this functionality to everyone with a flash card, trumping Sony at it's own game.

MS's strategy may lie in the server PC though, wth XB360 just being a hub. With wireless connection you stick you camera's memory in your PC to view on your TV, but that's an incovenience and beyond most homes. So yeah, the card's just a cash-cow to 'em it seems and not a marketting strategy like Sony's.

Too many assumptions here for my tastes. It's one thing to complain, but when we have no idea what they are doing and there's still complaining then I find it a tad annoying.

The difference between existing memory technologies and propriatery memory cards, is who makes money on them. =P

I think MS will want a healthy margin as well.

Sony needs to use the Memory stick Pro Duo with the PS3!!!! Plan and simple

Why aren't more people talking about how ugly the memory card for the Xbox 360 is.
