There are already two books written by the very famous japanese writer Eiji Yoshikawa telling the romanced life of Miyamoto Musashi, most famous japanese sword master.

One is called Musashi.

Actually Inoue's manga is more or less the graphical version of that novel. Of course, there're some fictional elements in the novel. Some duels didn't actually happen. The whole thing is inspired by Musashi's "memoirs" "The Five Rings".
