Microsoft upset over leaked images of the 360

Gee, I wonder why? If you missed it, an image was leaked that showed the Xbox 360 design in all its glory; you can find the pictures here. According to Internet rumors, Microsoft now believes the leak came from the MTV production staff. Supposedly, an actual console wasn't going to be showed, just the render that is being passed around. In any case, a couple other images hit the net: this one showing what appears to be a 64MB memory card inserted into the system and this side shot of the console with a 40GB hard drive attached.

more rumors on games
Okay, grain of salt time. IGN's rumor column has a few intriguing tidbits. First, the biggie. Halo 2.5 will be available launch day and it will come pre-loaded on the hard drive. It will feature high-res textures, widescreen res, 720p, and cut-scenes that don't feature LOD pop-in. I would assume it'd also have all the new maps. If true, smart move; the $399 console with the hard drive has a pack-in game and everyone now has a reason to buy the hard drive separately. The other rumor is that the system will have 40 titles available the first month. 15-20 at launch, and ten more each two weeks. Some names being tossed around are Perfect Dark Zero, Test Drive, the new Need for Speed, PGR3, Burnout 4, and a Namco racing title. Can't ever have enough racers, apparently.

Microsoft gets what they get for dealing with MTV. I personally think that's hilarious. And they weren't even going to show the console? Pathetic!

As far as the launch titles - smart move; I definitely see a range that large as helping to move consoles in the months immediately after the holiday season, which will be even more crucial than the holidays themselves if Microsoft wants to build any sort of comfortable lead before PS3 launches.

Isn't it just a part of the viral marketing of MS, including all the "leaks"?

"Can't ever have enough racers, apparently. "

Me either.

If there are a bunch or racers at launch, I am all over this launch. :D

Probably would have been anyways, this will just make it a done deal.

I like it! If it's true. Guess it is, otherwise MS wouldn't be upset about it...

But yeah, it's MTV. Like getting upset if your dog eats the burger you left on the table while going for a leak.

If microsoft were upset about something they'd sue. They're wanking the fanboi's with droplets of info, they know it's savoured more that way.

I don't think they'd sue MTV, regardless of what were to get leaked by them. Talk about PR backlash! If they're targetting the MTV demographic, the last thing they would ever want to do is rally that demographic against themselves by suing the very channel who's fanbase they were originally trying to acquire.

If they were truly only going to show the render on MTV....

...woah, I hope not. That can't be right. If it is, I'm very worried about what MS will do with their 30 minutes :? Presumably now the image is out, they'll have to show us more than that anyway..

They've leaked the specs, the design, the games...what else is there to know about teh Xenon! :p

YAWN. Bring on the REV! :p

how well do racing games work in America? AFAIK the biggest market for racing games is definately Europe - and I'm not even sure it will even launch overhere before 2006.

Strangely, my favorite genre is the racing one, and I'm not in the least excited about any upcoming racer on Xbox2. Perhaps the one from Namco, depending what it turns out to be, but Ridge Racer V IMO left a lot to be desired... I'd probably even buy it, but buying Xbox2 because of that 1 title is surely out of the question. For that it would need either a Gran Turismo class racer or something more akin to the original Need for Speed (of course all at 60 fps, that means car reflections too).

Wait did i read this right ? The console will be 400$ with out a hardrive ?

Well at least there will be a ton of games in the first month

Jvd you read it wrong. ;)

$400 WITH the hard drive; $299 without.

ah thank the lord i was going to say thats so expensive. Well anyway 400$ .. hmm gotta increase it to 10$ a week

I was about to post the same thing, but when you read the entire sentance, something isn't quite right:

If the price of $399 is for an Xbox360 + a game + the harddrive, wouldn't that nullfy the reason to drive the harddrive seperately, as they can get it at a very very good deal?

The above sentence, while very specific in that it's the price for with the harddrive, is awefully confusing in the following subset.

The real problem is that
Halo 2.5 = $50
40 GB Harddrive = $50
SYSTEM = $299

wtf... a 40GB harddrive should NOT cost $50 in Fall 2005.

Anyone else thinking it'd be a good idea to give the HDD a bit of iPod style functionality? I wouldn't have thought it'd be an expensive addition to the hardware to give that sort of functionality and may well encourage everyone to buy it!

Four-hundred bucks? Heh. Microsoft may just be leaving the door wide open for Sony.

Personally, I'm kind of relieved. Pricing like that will give me another reason to wait. I typically buy hardware on launch day or soon after, but it's getting to be a pain finding room for all these consoles. Besides, I have a ton of current games I need to finish.

If the rumor is true, perhaps "Halo 2.5" will be the catalyst to sell these higher-priced systems... Myself, I find the Halo games to be some of the most repetitive and uninvolving titles I've ever played... another reason I'm feeling lukewarm about the whole thing.

Kind of funny to me that for a company that wants so badly to pry the living room from Sony's hands, they don't seem to be putting their (considerable) money where their mouths are. They're the underdogs; I expected them to fight a lot harder and scrappier than this.

Guess the losses they sustained with Xbox really made them blink. Not good when you're up against Sony and PS3.
