MGS4 movie

As an aside...

I agree that I think Killzone may be possible now. It will take a LOT of work and money and time... but I think PS3 may be up to it. Maybe not the clarity of some of the rendering/filtering, and maybe some aliasing... but overall I think it can do it.

Killzone seems to excell in subtle lighting and shadowing, animation, and particle effects.

Those are all things CELL can excell at or can assist the GPU with. e.g. someone had linked to a demo (not CELL based) of a particle system that looked VERY similar to the explosions in KZ.

Obviously the scene we saw would be very scripted in a real game, and the Killzone devs did not impress with KZ1 regardless of potential and promises... but it is looking more and more like something in that ballpark is quite possible.

Obviously I would want to see someone playing it, with a controller, on a finished system, but overall I think that ballpark is attainable (minus some AA and filtering).

I think the KZ trailer had more to do with theme and art paired with some reall cool technology choices and art direction.

Anyhow, thought this would be a good time to share that ;)

I agree. Killzone itself was visually great...but something about this MGS trailer that makes me feel that it tops Killzone. They both seem similar...but I can't put my finger on it. This MGS trailer has me more WOWed than the Killzone trailer. I'm thinking its the faces of Snake and Otacon. For once, in a game...I saw emotions in their faces. Human gestures there that portrayed how they where feeling without having to say words. The way SS moved the cigarette in his mouth...it all seemed so natural. I honestly feel that artwork and cinema can be portrayed in some form now. That words don't have to be the only medium to express and progress the plot. Of course..that all depends on whos developing this game. Kojima is more than able.

You really need to see this Video Acert!!! :)

Yo - this trailer is I N S A N E !!!!!!!!

I'm not normally one for these useless one liners, but this is one of the first times I've watched a trailer and found myself smiling in a long time.

Someone on the other side of the web just gave me something to contemplate. He says:

It bears repeating MGS4 is currently running on a PS3 dev system with:

75% the Clockspeed of the final CELL

Rambus RAM with 75% percent of PS3

An off the shelf GPU that runs 30% slower than RSX

A PCI-Express memory bus FIVE PERCENT as fast as a PS3

Good times ahead. :)

Well since the final dev-kits aren't supposed to be sent out till December, I'd say it is a pretty safe bet those are right except for the gpu, which is an unknown at this point.

Well, since the GPU hasn't even taped out yet (that we know), I think if anything we know the GPU isn't up to spec yet.

Is that really true though? I mean how do we really know what Kojima had access to?

According to Sony's own timeline that's what is available to devs at the moment. Of course, there's always the off-chance that Kojima has a special kit with a Cell processor more inline with the final specs, but I'm unable to remember Nvidia's timeline so I'm not sure if RSX has taped out yet or not, but I'm rather certain he wouldn't have an RSX available yet even if the Cell he was working on was to final spec.

Well good news anyway, I do remember hearing something ealier about Kojima stating that the game will only look better.

Thanks for the link. VERY nice!

Konami is REALLY witty.

FPS = Forget Pre-rendered Stuff
FPS = Format Play Station

Snake looks GREAT. Animation is dead on, lighting and shadowing seem to be excellent. Dynamic, crumbling world with a TON of great great GREAT particle effects (not the pre-fabbed clouds we see, but seems to be very organic in feel). Now you cannot tell much about the environment without seeing it in full detail but from what was shown it looked gorgeous. The partciles and dynamic crumbling world are AWESOME. Did I mention that yet ;)

Now the reservations: Most of this is like cut scene stuff... not gameplay. Stuff always looks different in gameplay. A fair compare and contrast with gameplay scenes vs. in engine cut scenes is GOW (I am NOT comparing GOW and MGS!). Take the scene where the big bad mother monster rips through the wall and compare it to the burning car scene... the animation, particles, etc... and general feel/perspective are REALLY different. Obivously the cinematic experience is better. So in that regards I would be hesitant--and quite fairly IMO. There is always a difference between cut scenes/in engine demos and actual gameplay. PGR3 is another great looking game that has that same 'tension' so to speak... the in game trailers where you are looking up from the seat, cinematic views under bridges, etc look great but are NOT the same as the ingame-play experience. Close, but there is a difference.

What we saw in MGS4 was the cinematic experience--which demonstrates a GREAT art direction paired with a dead on color pallete and technologies that emphasize the goals of the developers. KUDOS!

I REALLY like the techno modern war direction... I guess I would like that in a FPS  Stealth/3rd person is not my thing (reference my GOW comments in earlier posts) but this is a really great looking game and, based on Konami's track record, should be THE KILLER APP for the PS3. No one has to worry about the KZ factor "KZ promised a lot... but the end result is a miss". MGS4 looking GOOD is only a PERK. The substance is in the gameplay and story... everything else is icing on the cake!

Anyhow, I really liked the Dust and Particles, they really stood out to me... best I have seen yet. Animation was excellent, but seemed to be in the mold of cut scenes/cinematics, so I am not sure what they say about the actual game. Models... great models (although Snakes face, while great, is not as good as some have suggested... at least in my ignorant opinion).

I did think I saw a few places in the scenery that may be low poly/texture detail, but that is impossible to say in a video like this. But here is why it does NOT matter:

While all us HDTV gamers will complain MOST will be on 480i/p. That means they get super sampling... the same reason TV looks 10000x better than a game is because the SOURCE media--real life--is infinite resolution. In that respect HD is overblown (still a fan mind you!) so even if certain aspects may not be as clear or "perfect" as we may want, from the video impression it DOES NOT MATTER. That stuff gets washed away when you fit it to a normal screen.

Really impressive. Rating it as in-engine cut scene, I would put it up there with PGR3 and GOW's ingame cut scene/cinematics. That is just my impression and opinion (not a bashing... just where I feel it "fits" in the next gen scheme". I still rate the KZ trailer at the top for art/technology/fidelity, but that is because the source media is better--this could be better, but hard to tell from *this* video (at an angle, low quality, low res, etc). (Not that anyone is interested, the footage I am thinking of is the recent PGR3 ingame cimema from last month and the E3 mother/monster through wall scene... so that is where I am coming from when trying to gauge ingame cimematics. I think all three have excellent art direction and match their tech with their game well... obviously I reserve all final judgements until seeing how they play on final hardware).

Anyhow, if there was any doubt: PS3 is going to have some killer exclusives. And this only reaffirms what basically everyone knows: PS3 WILL be the market leader, worldwide, again. Why? Need look no farther than Snake. Proven franchise, proven gameplay, killer next gen graphics.

Nuff said. Yet all the 360 is doomed, looks like crap, cannot compete, etc... stuff is so out of line (and stupid) it is annoying.

Ps- Anyone who knows me I am NOT slamming PS3. And I already have a couple pro-MGS posts before even seeing the video

Double post yeah....and I hate that but I got a mirror up if anyone is interested in a NON streaming version of the trailer (still CAM)

Also something to remember Kojima said we would see "Raidens maiden voyage" at the TGS. So who knows what else he has up his sleeve, since this trailer shows no signs of Raiden.

If PS3 can get 4-5 exclusives that look on par with MGS4 in realtime!! It will cause a lot of people to second guess the XBox 360.

:sigh: True, it will make those who are PS fans who were getting excited about the 360 because it is new and looks good, it will make them pause. But for Xbox-game fans it probably wont do a darned thing. Further, that is to say the 360 has no games that look great/compare, which I am sorry, I would have to disagree.

Killzone was widely referred to as a render and will likely not be realized on PS3. MGS4 shows that it can be.

*Killzone
*MGS4
*Motostorm
*Warhawk
*Vision Gran Tourismo

Vision GT's movie at hi resolution did NOT look very good IMO. The trees were horrible. Yeah, it looks good at 320x240, but on a higher res feed it was NOT impressive. In my opinion of course. The F1 racer and basically every 360 racer shown so far (less Full Auto which is a different genre) looked better.

Why? It was using PS2 assets. GT5 is gonna SOOOO blow away Vision GT. Anyhow, get the high def Vision GT trailer... the small media is deceptive. Basically this gen racer with better filtering and higher res textures... As Sony said, that was only a demo... GT5 will look a LOT better.

Me and alot of other people here have been saying for months now that Sony wouldn't have straight out lied about the look of KZ. Why does it take MGS4 to point that out, I don't know. But I don't care either I'm just glad that I can say the game's name without being jump and beat up on.:D

On that list from MajorNelson I think they will show something from KZ and the gang. Hopefully we can get direct feed from all of them.

It looks awesome, I love the lighting looks very natural, and the animations were very good, especially the running. Some of the facial stuff, and cigarette/lips stuff looked pretty bad but i'm sure it's a work in progress.

I don't think it's in a class of it's own, it's basically an 8 minute cut-scene, so you havr to take it as it is. if you look at the cut-scenes from the last half of the GOW clip they are definately in the same league. There were quite alot of low res textures, and the hair and facial models had many moments where they looked less than impressive. Snakes suit looks superb though.

Graphics were pretty good, could have been better though in many places, what really struck me overall was the great cinematic feel, you just get a feeling this is going to be one great story. I'm looking forward to seeing this game come along.

You confuse the issue. The primary issue was whether KZ was realtime -- as some claimed -- or a CGI render target.

Even if KZ looks the same as the E3 video (note: same, not similar... if there is aliasing, filtering issues, lowered textures, etc... that is NOT the same), if it comes out that it was CGI and not in the enigne then it still does not change the status of the E3 video.

To compare: Blue Odysies video at E3 was CGI. And we now know that the hardware can match that CGI render target. If it had been claimed the CGI was realtime--and it was not--regardless of the fact the final game looked the same does not change the reality of the E3 footage. (Note: MS never claimed it was realtime nor that was how the game would look... just using an example).

People forget what the Killzone 2 renders looked like.

Now MGS4 does look really great, but you can definitely tell the KZ renders are even higher quality, and hence, I would say offline rendered.

On the MGS4 shots, you can still sometimes see a blurry texture, the edges of geometry, where the normal maps have been applied, and jaggies in the many of the objects.

It's a trap!!

No one do it. OK, it's not a trap, but it's only gonna eventually lead to a decent into Xbox360 vs PS3. It's not worth the problems it'll bring. This is about the MGS video, let keep it that way. Sorry, seismologist, just don't want to see more console war garbage.
