Maximum PC on Next Gen Graphics Chips

What you're talking about _is_ called X800pro. It competes with 6800 non-GT and is double as fast as a 6600GT. There is no X800 (without Pro or XT or whatnot behind the number).

X800 PRO = R420 (and R423), X800 (no suffix's) = R430 (new, cheaper version or R480, based on 110nm process).

ATI recently announced X850 XTPE, X850 XT, X850 PRO based on R480 to address the high end, and X800 XL, X800 based on R430 to sit between the R480 and RV410 based products.

yea, but who can blame him for being unable to keep up with the myriad of overlapping and unattainable product names and suffixes ATI is throwing at us these days.

Ooops, I missed that one.

So now we have X800 Pro, XT, XT PE, XL, "pure". That's ridiculous...soon they can start using random numbers, the normal (l)user won't be able to get it anyway.

Plus add in the X850 (R480) product lines....it is becoming a mess.

Well, they have discontinued the X800 line in favor of the X850s if that makes any difference. They also decided to scrap the X700 XT as the X800 (R430) stands to take it's place.

Whats curious is that now they have stopped the X700 XT, AIB's are now bringing PRO's to the market with XT, or better, specifications. Go figure.

That is strange, especially since the X800 is priced rather high compared to the 6600 GT, at the moment at least. You would think that it would be better for the AIB's if they could slap a XT name on the higher clocked PRO's.

Though it might of course be the case that there still is rather few X700's that can clock that high and Ati doesn't want to take any "blame" for not delivering the X700 XT's in quantity. It's not like they don't have/had their fair share of problems with availability anyway.

I think those prices are likely to change fairly quickly dependant on vendor. Sapphire aren't listing a 128MB version yet, at Komplett, but their high end 256MB version is already down to £175, Gainwards standard (?) 6600 GT with 128MB appears to be £172, XFX's £145, so the 256MB X800 version is already in a similar ballpark to some vendors 128MB 6600's, and the Sapphire 128MB X800 will surely be listing lower than the 256MB version.

The XT was always left to the AIB to test for, but they never did initially - it seems they are more willing to come up with "special" PRO SKU's to differentiate from one another than just use a mandated XT SKU. ATI has fairly strict policies on what they allow their AIB's to do out of spec and I'd guess that with the dumping of the XT SKU they have relaxed what the board vendors are allowed to do with the PRO SKU a little more.

komplett.se: Powercolor 128 Mb X800 (Powercolor) 299€ , MSI 128 Mb 6600 GT 194€. Though the funny thing is that Sapphire has a 256 Mb version for 277€. And as you say, the 128 Mb version of that card will surely be cheaper. The question is when we will see that card. The availability for the 256 Mb version is at the beginning of March. And it's preliminary.

The point being it is already competing with some board vendor solutions and its not significanly ramped yet.

It's not available yet afaik so i wouldn't say that it's already competing. And the X800's that will be available first have a rather high price.

But yes, some board vendors will have to lower their prices when it will be available. But imo, it's not directly competing with the 6600 Gt until the 128 Mb versions are readily available and with a competitive price.
