Lost Planet - Interview

those screeens show nothing that impressive as far as texture quality goes, and i'm mostly judging by the demo whic his nice, but sick explosions and great motion blur mask what are otherwise fairly average GFX imo.

Like i said , the screenshots tell another story :

Gear of wars :

Lost planet :

Texture in gear of wars look worse.

A close up of a Gear of wars model show also how low poly the models are compared to lost planet :

Comparisons of these scenes is a little bit difficult, because they show vastly different scenes. However, I would say it's more or less a tie for texture resolution.

Geometry-wise, Lost Planet might have a little bit more, but still nothing out of the ordinary IMO.

It is a lot more gemometry you need if you don't use the normal mapping to fake the detail , but it is pointless to discuss something so evident.

Of course you need much more geometry for the same detail, but if you look at the giant mantis thing in Lost Planet, it seems to use some normal mapping as well (the yellow belly especially).
One thing you also have to keep in mind: What kind of enemy are we looking at? One that attacks you in dozens, or a single boss monster? I haven't seen enough footage of either of the games to know...

Unless something really magical happens with the 3D universe as we know it, don`t bet on having normal-mapping detail by using pollies. I don`t think multi-million poly models are all that feasible...now will they ever be...and don`t get me started on sub-pixel pollies, one of the shittiest things that ever existed:)(maybe a bit OT the last part)

Yeah, but while it use bump mapping for tiny details , Gow use it for every detail and have a "flat" look compared to lost planet.
