Kinect technology thread

Ooh, maybe your 360 don't do 1080p but mine can, either way my point is that it is a matter of processing power, not a hardware limitation.
What do you mean by 'hardware limitation' though? The ahrdware itself is only providing an array of sample points. In that respect it has no limirs beyond resolution and accuracy, and also no abilities. That is, the camera can't detect a single skeleton! It provides data and it's up to the software side of Kinect to handle that. Looking at the available data and results we've seen of close players, as I explained above I don't believe the current design can successfully accomodate 4 players because the camera doesn't have sufficient resolution to provide data enough that four close players can be decerned. Whether one puts that down to software, not having a clever enough algorithm that can identify players as well as a human could, or a hardware issue, that the camera isn't providing data to suitable resolution and accuracy, it all comes down to the same thing. Kinect doesn't seem able to do more than have 2 active players.

Although there are background dancers in Dance Central, no? Or am I imagining that?

Actually the current official position is:

"Update: PrimeSense has gotten in touch with us to say that it was only the demo software it showed off at E3 that could support only two users, not the hardware itself. Theoretically, with enough processing power, PrimeSense's hardware licensed by Kinect could support any number of players."
http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/19/kinect-how-it-works-from-the-company-behind-the-tech/

Now, the question is whether 360 has or not enough processing power to allow 4 active players.

(But at least this should be interesting on Pcs)
I'm amazed. First people complain that they don't have enough space to accommodate Kinect in their living room, then they complain that it doesn't support 4 players? Where would you put them???

As far as I can tell, the two player limitation is based on how many people can stand comfortably side by side within the Kinect playspace (6-10.5 feet wide). An average person is around 5-6' wide with their arms stretched out (a good approximation of the space they'll need while playing). At the front of the playspace, that's about 1 person, and at the back, it's about 2. Any more than that and black eyes and injuries will ensue.

Unless you know for sure they are the same people, are different viewpoints on the same product so unexpected?

Could be, but you asked the ? of did it go from 42 to 20, and I believe the correct answer is 24 to 11.

Yeesh, wrong. A quick google or bing shows it's been reduced to 20 points. Not the 11 that you claim. It originally tracked 48.

Googling or Bing brought that up in about 10 seconds. :p

Patsu came close though with his 42 -> 20 guess. :) And then smooshed his face into a nice cream pie when he changed his mind. ;)

The leaked Kinect specs on play.com specifies 2 active players. PrimeSense's design probably doesn't care how many players there are (on paper).

Yeah, i just meant that giving more processing power (like pluging kinect on a Pc, or coming up with a new tracking system that's less resource intensive) could enable 4 player tracking even with 1st gen kinect :p

I guess I need a bigger chunk of that $500 mil so I'll be better informed.

There you go, from 48 joints to 20. So if they want to up the player count while keeping the rest, I supposed they can try reducing the number of joints further... or use other types of tracking algorithm. ^_^

Kinect motion sensr is very low quality.

320x240x30fps.

am i missing something ?

Product Features
•Color VGA Motion Camera 640x480 pixel resolution @30FPS
•Depth Camera 640x480 pixel resolution @30FPS
•Array of 4 microphones supporting single speaker voice recognition
•Fully compatible with all Xbox 360 models*
•Revolutionary technology that includes body recognition

The higher res is the color webcam, whereas the IR/depth/motion cam is the lower res one. As far as I know, Kinect doesn't use the color cam for tracking skeleton motion (Too much data, can't see in the dark).

So we are agreeing there are only two cameras correct ?

However you say one is 320x240 and one is 640x480. However gamestop says

So who is right ? I would expect gamestop to get its info directly from ms and the other info comes from play.com back in june
