You know, all this talk is great, but here's what I think the PS3 will do: play games. And that's about it. With Sony's track record with the PS2, I don't expect the PS3 to expand much beyond games. Now if they had announced a HDD included and an extensive central network service, maybe I would believe them.

I can stream DVD content, please don't make accusations like that when i've done it myself
You've streamed dvd content (i'm talking a dvd movie here ) from your pc to a friends pc in another state and had no problems what so ever ? . Or have you streamed a dvd from one pc in your house to another in your house ?

Someone out of my home network..so basically over the general web. You can use VLC to do that....basically use your IP and the name of the content your streaming and stream the content over.

let me know next time u do it and i will log on and i will belive u . We tried to do it with my sisters foi connection (10mbit d / 5mbit up ) and we got crappy performance streaming a hdef eps of smallville

Thats the problem, the High Def episodes of Smallvile is killing your bandwith mix that with the fact that its High Definition content and your bound to get subpar video quality. I'll try to set up my PC agian to act as a streaming server with VLC.

I seriously doubt you were streaming DVD quality video out over your home connection. The bandwidth required for DVD quality video is a lot more than a home connection can put out. Its Mbytes compared to Kbytes.

I wouldn't even be able to stream a dvd quality video over the net. We've tried that too ( a rip of toy story )

I can believe a psp video (Barely ) but i find it hard for you to stream to a non local pc anything higher than a few megs . I just don't see how you can stream something where the bit rate is in the few thousands .

hmm, i can watch an xvid of "the oc" on my laptop through my 11mbit wi-fi perfectly.

Anyways, jvd, do you have hi def episodes of smallville, like at 720 res? how big is the filesize for 1 episode? I just find it weird because usually nobody puts up high def episodes on the net, like they're ripped from high def, but theyre not 1080i/720 high def.

One time I downloaded a gilmore girls episode that was in high def (1080i), it was like ...3gb or so and man I couldn't play it on my PC! :(

hopefully someone uses linux on ps3 to make a program to run a whole bunch of file types so it can replace my modded xbox media centre.

Yea my sister does that she has a hacked hd tivo so i dunno the file sizes off the top of my head , thinking like 5 or so gigs for 720p at 40 mins

ya man, bitrate on a dvd is what 9200 kB/s? so ou would need hit a good 1.5mb/s to stream dvd content. good luck, I can barely get 1mb/s on a direct ethernet cable connection from my PC to XBOX.

You're whole argument is basically ridiculous, even if your home internet connection could support 1.5MB/s(4500+kb/s) which is ridiculous, he Wi-Fi network you ar connecting to would never allow that much BW for download, lets get real here. Anything over 600-800kB/s(low quality) can not be streamed over an internet connection.

Until bandwidth speeds increase dramatically, none of this will ever happen.

Well looks to me Sony is going to really push the PSP to be used with the PS3 in this way. If and when Sony can pull this off, this will change the way people will look at handheld to console connectivity. The GBA to GC thing would just be laughable.

It will be nice to listen to MP3s on vacation on my PSP using my PS3's HDD.

You can already do that with *any* gadget that can access the internet.

I.e: [Handheld] <--Internet--> [Internet Radio Stream]

It doesn't take much to make your own mp3 stream using winamp for example...

scooby: I think you've got your numbers all messed up:

First of all small b = bit, captical B = Byte. (makes it easier)

1.5 MB = 1536 KB = 12288Kb or 12Mb. Using an Ethernet cable (I'm assuming you should be running a 100Mbps connection) you should get about 12.5MBps, or at least practically over 5MBps at least. If it's only a 10Mbps connection, you'll obviously be doing 10 times less.

Exactly phil thats my point. But I don't have some handheld that can access the internet with using winamp. But I do have a PSP. I will be getting a PS3. So, when these two can access each other over the web its all good for me. :)

Its video we are talking about . Create your own video stream on your home pc , go to your friends house , jump on his wifi connection adn then try and stream it with your psp and tell us your results

Ken Kutaragi interview part3
He covers why there is no CELL GPU, lack of eDRAM, etc. etc. etc. I browsed it pretty quickly.

Babelfish makes my brain hurt :( A better translation would definitely seem worthwhile, he seems to discuss some pretty interesting stuff.

He also touches on backwards compatibility, unified shaders vs dedicated shaders. Again, though, what he's saying is almost totally lost in the machine translation.
