They attempted to explain faster then light travel, subsapace communication, heraldy later to become symbology and genetic symbology. They explained many of the ships and weapons and how they were supposed to work by the principles of pseudo-science. There were distances given and speeds the ships could travel by set scientific limits on the drives There was info on the genetics of the races involved, and how their makeup was altered by strong genetic traits or weak ones and how gravity effected another race.
They even go and name through the lore and history of the series who was responsible for what "pseudo-scientific" breakthroughs. They explained how the shields and weapons worked through pseudo-scientific means. All this was in the built in encyclopedia of the game.
Whether you want to suspend disbelief as accept their explanations is a completely different issue but it explains it's universe like Star Wars and Star trek do.
