One might wonder if PS2 sales weren't this dominating when it was at its peak in Japan. Well, there's the GB(A) of course, but comparing stationary consoles to much cheaper handhelds isn't fair IMO, so if one discounts that...

Outside Japan the DS isn't as dominant. Latest numbers from Nintendo suggest that they _sold_ 16 million DS so far, whereas Sony _shiped_ 16 Million. So Nintendo is not leaps and bounds ahead of the competition. You also have to consider that the psp launched 6 month later than the DS in eu and the us. It costs as aprox. twice as much and had no hardware revision like the Ds with Lite. So all in all I'd say that successfully penetrated Mari..ehm..the handheld market. ^^
Do you agree?

Well no matter how many units Sony have shipped I have little doubt that DS is 3-4 million ahead worldwide at this point. With its dominance beginning to take on unprecidented levels in Japan and with Lite now releasing in the US and soon Europe it looks like that gap is only going to increase. Sony have definitely gotten a share of the handheld market, but with Nintendo having 100% of the market before Sony entered that was always going to happen regardless.

Just like you have to consider that PSP has the advantage of Sony being willing to lose a large amount of money for every system sold. DS is selling at a profit..

DS is selling at a profit..

Exactly..heck I'm willing to bet they make at least $50 profit on each DS/DSL sold.

PSP is analogous to Xbox ie lose a buttload of money on hardware to grab marketshare.

Perhaps not $50 profit on each DSL, or at least not yet anyway.

What's vendor markup margins on portables? I don't know if Nintendo is their own distributor in most markets, but they aren't here in scandinavia, so there'll be an extra layer of markup between manufacturer and stores.

Besides, DSL contains some custom components, such as the battery and the top LCD screen (extra thin and more durable). That probably jacks up the build cost a little.

I would. But they need to stop with the ps2 sequels on psp. It gives the psp a bad name. Anyway, how much did psp sell in the us?

Thinking of the japan sales, why would capcom and sega prefer the psp over nds?

Appears to be irrational from a business pov.

Not really : on the DS you're in competition with Nintendo's own games and they're taking a large part of the market (what is the best selling third party game on the DS ?)

yeah, that's what I figured too. Nintendo claims the "simple-game" genre with their franchises. Most adults (a large demographic for the ds in japan) just wait for a new -Trainer instead of something like Monster Hunter.

Not only that but they also have to compete with cheaper older GBA games that can also be played on DS and there's a ton of GBA games out there.

while other people made good points, i think both capcom and sega are sometimes buisness retards who think they have more market pull than they actualy have. think of all of the games sega and/or capcom made exclusivly for the GC (or started out exclusive) even though the market was in sony's favor. with sega specificly, i think they fumbled by making panzer dragoon xbox exclusive. it was a series that only saturn fans relished, and they brought it to a console with almost no market share in japan (where the saturn actualy enjoyed some success).

sometimes i think sega and capcom think they can decide the winner of a console war, but it's usualy not the case.
