Jak II

some reviewer from a mag at GA said that RC2 is more fun than Jak2.

From my experience with the first episode of each, I would have no problem to agree with that.

GMR said the same thing..

"Better than: Jak & Daxter
Not as good as: Rachet & Clank
Wait for it: Rachet & Clank 2"

IMHO Jak & Daxter > Ratchet & Clank

The thing I liked about J&D better is game-mechanics, one-world, humour, characters... this all made it somewhat more fun to me, although R&C was damn good. The most annoying thing about J&D was the difficulty of the game which seriously had a hitch on game length. Other than that both are very good, although quite different somehow. I'll be owning both anyway and I think anyone else passing up neither is going to miss out, that's for sure. :)

I agree. R&C has way too much of that synthetic look for my taste, and the whole gameplay wasn't handled the way I was imagining. In my eyes, that game is a bit overrated and J&D underrated nowadays.

Both games are in fact very different. i should not talk too much about those games, since I've not finished RC yet, but from the few worlds I played I got more joy than my whole journey though JD.

About the differences, I think JD (not Jak2) is more a Rare Banjo copycat whereas RC is closer to Rare JFG (JD being inferior to Banjo and RC superior to JFG - gameplaywise and everything IMO).

nonetheless I plan to buy both sequels 8)

Too much games to buy :(

To all europeans, apparently Jak II will go on sale in 4 days (october 15th, wednesday)... 8)

And yeah, too many games. I still have to complete ZOE2 on extreme mode... :!:

Ratchet and clank was technically a nice game, but gameplay wise it was just a regular collect-a-thon platformer. I really don't know why it was regarded as somehting special, but sure Jak and dexter attempeted and achieved more froma gameplay and onnovative point of view.

JD gameplay was too often centered around collecting those coins sitting alll over the levels. How can you not calling it a collect-a-thon ???

I like J&D more, but in all honesty, I think you got them the other way around. J&D did really nothing new and innovative from the gameplay point of view. It's just that I never really liked any 3D platformer up to it, mostly for the technical or art/design reasons. J&D was the first game of it's kind that I thought was immersive enough for me to like, and I really liked it, but I never really gave Mario 64 or Rare's 3D games much chance.

In my opinion, J&D is the epithome of the 'classic' platformer, because it looks way better than any last gen game it derives from, and plays just as good or better than any of them. Some seasoned gamers don't like it becase it doesn't offer much new, but for a first time gamer, it's probably the best game of the it's kind there is.

On the other hand, R&C had a major twist to it's gameplay because it included tons of weapons and gadgets, made them very integral to the gameplay, and that separated it from any game of it's kind that I know of.

On the other-other hand Jak 2 now is adding many aspects of the gameplay never before used in a platformer game. It's again a game full of borrowed gameplay concepts, but it borrows them from games outside of the genre, and adds that traditional Naughty Dog polish to controls and graphics (which is good in my book)

Frankly if demo is anything to go by I can't find much reason to call J2 a platformer game to begin with (granted that's based on only two missions though).
I mean, there's FPS games with more platforming then that out there and they aren't called platformers either :p

I just got my copy of Jak II.... wow! I'll be back with impressions soon! :p

EDIT:

After having played for the last hour straight, I must say that I am very impressed, though there's one thing that really bugs me: tearing. In very populated areas, such as heaven city, tearing is very apparent and annoying, especially when using fast moving objects such as ships etc to get from A to B. At least, it is almost non existant when wandering around in the city outskirts. For any future game, I hope ND downgrades what ever is necessary to make these flaws less apparent.

IQ and animation though is very impressive though.

Jak 2 demo had a lot of framerate problems (frame drops, tearing, etc) If tearing in the more populated areas is all that is left of those problems, I'll be happy :)

In other news, Gamespy reviewer simply despised *everything* about this game, and gave it a score of 40% (frankly it surprised me he gave it even 40, after reading the review)

well, I would have to read the review I guess, but 40 souds quite a bit low, especially once you consider the effort that went into this game (and it really shows).

After playing now for several hours non-stop, tearing is about the only thing apparent - mostly only in the city. Tearing, as it seems, is only triggered by fast movement, in example, using the right analog stick to move the camera quick from left to right or hovering on a fast ship through the city. The tearing is much less apparent in less populated areas. In the city outskirts, there are hardly any. In Indoor levels, I haven't experienced any. To be quite honest, the tearing is a great annoyance, so to solve that, I've been doing most back tracking by foot instead of using a ship, which brings me to the next point:

The City is HUGE! So huge infact that it can be both an annoyance but also as very impressive and fun. The thing that needs some time is actually learning your way around, while keeping an eye on that tiny map at the bottom right. Especially when the cops are after you, it can be very tough. There are many people wandering the city as well as vehicles, so using a ship at fast speeds and quickly cause you to die (either by being shot or death at high velocity).

I'm still getting used to the game and quite francly don't know yet if I love the changes or hate them. On one hand, I kind of miss the flawless gameplay of the first part, yet appreciate the challenging the gameplay (it's very challenging) and new ideas. The city for now is an annoyance due to tearing and it being so huge that it's quite difficult to find your way around and keep the cops of your throat. The city outskirts make up for it though.

And yeah, despite tearing in the city, the graphics are damn impressive. Definately some of the best visuals I've seen and it's hard to believe sometimes that these visuals together with the superb animation is running on 1999 tech hardware.

phil, have you been bothered by tearing in MGS2 for example? I just want to gauge to what extent is the problem prominent in Jak 2 and to try to see will it bother me. Tearing in general is very low on my list of annoyances, I prefer it to 'old fashioned' frame skipping when it jumps from 30 to 60 and back.

to be quite honest, I have yet to see tearing in MGS2, so no, I would not think it's that prominent with me... well, until now.

It's better than slowdown though, that's for sure. :) When are you getting your copy?

is it PAL or NTSC version ,you'r playing ?

Phil :D:
It's the PAL version, but you can select 60Hz as well as progressive out. I've tried switching to 60Hz, but the tearing is still there. Progressive out has it too, on top of that, my monitor displays the game with over saturated green (haven't quite figured out why yet, the Getaway didn't have this problem). Anyway, the picture isn't really better - my interlaced 100Hz tv has a very clean picture, so I prefer to play it on either 50 or 60Hz anyway.

Isn't the game out in the States yet? I got my copy one day prior to release (they already had their shipment and started selling them).

some further impressions of the game after roughly 5 hours:

I just got my second weapon and I must say, it's becoming more and more fun to play. Definately a much better implementation to what Ratchet & Clank had to offer.

The tearing isn't that annoying anymore, as I do most backtracking on foot and less crashing when I use ships to get through the city. Speaking of which, I got the hooverboard.. wow! 8)

why do i always have to be broke when good games come out???
i could buy this today.... i probably will actually  where did u get it from? wasnt it supposed to come out on the 17th?

all retailers here in Switzerland have the game since yesterday, though it was officially to launch today I think. I'd call retailers as I'm sure they should have it by now as well. ;)

ok. aint gonna be out here then... gosh i'm so looking forward to this one... any news?

the demo did have tearing which was more evident when played in pro-scan, but i can deal with that...

oh and i noticed that the water is still the ciky water from the first game.... i mean, it looks better and it serves its purpose, but still, after seeign what was done in BG:DA 2 years ago, u'd think they would put a bit more effort... still, the game is absolutely delicious to look at, especially when the camera gets close to the characters to show the insane amount of detail in them...
