Most people in the west know you as “the Monkey Ball guy,â€￾ or from games like F-Zero for the arcade and GameCube. Your career at Sega goes much further back, though, and a lot of people have played games you were involved with even if they didn’t know it. Could you tell our readers a little bit of yourself, your history with Sega, and the games you have worked on?

Nagoshi: I started out primarily doing work on arcade games. The first really big title I was involved in was Virtua Racing. Shortly after that came Daytona USA, and Scud Race. So yes, initially, it was generally driving games. I also did a few other things for AM2, like some of the background art design for Virtua Fighter 2.

Nice to see Super Monkey Ball 3 is finally confirmed. I assume the adventure/RPG Nagoshi refers to is Shining Force Neo? What about any PSP/DS development?

I guess we'll have to wait untill E3. ;)

We’ve noticed tracks from your games (Scud Race, Daytona 2) will be appearing in Outrun 2. How did you go about working with AM2 and Sumo Digital for this? I take it you and the folks from AM2 still get along very well?

Nagoshi: I haven’t done anything for Outrun 2 at all, no. AM2’s in the same building here, though, so of course the staff of both teams still interact quite often.

Do you think we’ll ever see any sort of straight ports of those titles? Racing fans have been clamoring for them for a while now.

Nagoshi: Hmmm, I run quite a tight schedule here... [laughs] but our staff has talked about it before. A few of our younger staff members at Sega have expressed interest in taking them on themselves, even.

Recently footage of the original Dreamcast Scud Race tech demo surfaced on the internet. Were there any plans for a full release of the game?

Nagoshi: No, just a demo. A lot of people really wanted it, but... We didn’t because...huh, I really don’t know why. [laughs]

Speaking of which, any chance of a new Daytona anytime in the near future?

Nagoshi: We don’t have any public plans at the moment. But right now, driving games like Need for Speed and Burnout are big in the US, so we’ve had thoughts about a Daytona 3.

there is nothing I want from Amusement Vision more than straight complete arcade-exact ports of Scud Race and Daytona 2 (both ver) on current consoles (Xbox and/or GCN) and a new Daytona 3 on Xenon and or PS3.

Amusement Vision is wicked. SMB1+2 are such neat packages: easy to pick up, hard to master and so many great multiplayer/party games. F-Zero, yet another winner: technically brilliant, hardcore gameplay. Can't wait to see more of their works.

Well, to round up the confimred games they have in the works...

-Super Monkey Ball DX (PS2/Xbox) winter 2004/2005
-Shining Force NEO (PS2) spring 2005
-SpikeOut: Battle Street (Xbox) spring 2005
-Super Monkey Ball 3 (multi?) tba

Not to forget possible remakes/ conversions of famous racegames. ;)
