Interesting tiny tidbit about NV30

Was reading Computer Gaming World, PC Gamer and Computer Games Magazine this morning. In one of the magazines they had a tiny brief nothing new article on NV30 and Cg Apparently, Nvidia is set to launch their NV30 in a matter of weeks officially according to them.

That isn't what I'm getting from various sources I've heard that the paper launch won't be until mid-september & actual hardware being available between late october-early november, strange. There's so much conflicting info don't know what to believe I trust my source.

Well considering that the lead time for print magazines is on the order of 3 months perhaps something between the time the magazine was told that and the time it actually took for the magazine to hit the stands. Assuming the information was accurate to begin with naturally.

I just read that, too. Probably written 6-8 weeks ago and the writer was told a 'fall' release date, so he was guesstimating.

"Apparently, Nvidia is set to launch their NV30 in a matter of weeks officially according to them."

Its the September issue of Computer Gaming World, page 33, in an Article about Nvidia in the Read Me section. The first line is "Sometime in the next few weeks, Nvidia is scheduled to launch their latest insanely powerful new graphiucs chip for gaming."

Talks a lot about Cg, the Nforce2, and cinematic quality graphics.

Quote in the article about David Kirk, Chief Scientist of Nvidia: " Kirk believes that we're less than a year away from real-time rendered versions of the pre-rendered graphics we saw in Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within."

As a few people have said, the lead time in producing a magazine is somewhere in the region of 5-7 weeks. Any supposed information they have been given is probably well out of date now.

expect a paper launch ASAP... if the card comes out before christmas or not.. nvidia will definitely do something to keep their minions of fanboys from buying 9700's

I agree, if NV30 specs indicate it will significantly outperform R300, then we will hear about it before R300 hits the streets. And contrary to what some people on this forum would say, that does not show that nVidia is "bad", "mean", or "evil". It just shows that they are smart. If people see a better card just around the corner, they'll wait before dropping $399.

On the other hand, if the NV30 specs do not clearly show that it will be significantly faster than R300 (i.e. 128 bit bus?), then nVidia will keep it quiet as long as possible. If people find out early that the performance will merely be on par with R300, they'll just run out and buy an R300. So nVidia will hide the specs and keep people guessing, hoping they hang on long enough to buy an NV30 when it is released.

I'll even turn this around into a prediction: If we don't get full specs of NV30 before R300 hits the streets, then don't expect NV30 to be much faster (or faster at all) than R300.

Well, apparently a lot of sites are being briefed now (Reverend and NVMax as examples) , if they weren't going to do something, why brief anyone at all ? :D

This is ridiculous. The CEO of NVIDIA has just stated that in fact the NV30 is not taped out... How much more evidence do you need to know that the NV30 is no where near a launch? Even a paper launch would be ... the most stupid thing nvidia has ever done. I can imagine that people would get tired of speculating about the nv30 performance bla bla bla. Crap .... the card in volume production based on what I have read and seen won't be until January at the earliest. so what is the point of posting a relatively uninformed writers opinion on when the nv30 will be launched? What is the point of all this garbage speculation on AFAIK vaporware. Nvidias CEO is even skeptical about if they would have the card for Christmas.

Well it depends on what he meant with the term "final tape out or something like that".
We don't know when it will hit the shelves. All we have is his statement that it will be ready for holiday season whatever that means.
You don't need to cry like a small child because someone quotes an article from a journal or whatever. R300 ist paper launched so there is no room for speculation. Now we will wait and see what NV30 will be and then we will decide on what to buy :)
That is what most people will do no matter how much you seem to like ATI :)

Hmmm... Perhaps to distract attention from other things that are going on that they would prefer to receive less attention. Can't think what that would be...

Muddying the waters can be an objective in and of itself.
