Intel gave a statement about Cell!

I believe he was saying that only if you had a 8088 CPU would you want to replace your CPU with a cell one.
And I believe he was being sarcastic...and he was wrong too ;)

Well he has a tendency to hate all things Sony - so I didn't think it was sarcasm so much as an attempt to make fun of Cell. /shrug

I was being sarcastic...also wanted to make a point about how people in general aren't going to be scrambling to get their hands on a CELL cpu to replace their desktop Intel/AMD cpus since CELL would likely perform worse than a highend Intel/AMD cpu on desktop apps. ;)

What desktop apps? Word-processor? Spreadsheet? Corporate application? I would really like to know which one of these so called "desktop apps" really needs a powerful CPU to run. Even my 5 year old PIII laptop can run these applications.

IMO, most of the things that really need processing power, like graphics, sounds, general game stuff (physics, AI, character animation, etc..) would work well with cell. The rest, the so called general purpose apps, rely mostly on I/O speeds and memory capacity to work well.

I've never seen a non x86 cpu run x86 apps faster than an x86 cpu...

Cell would have to emulate an x86 cpu to run x86 apps which is slower...

Of course if all you're interested in is Linux and Linux apps then a CELL based desktop would suit your needs just fine. However 90% of desktop users use Windows therefore they're not going to be scrambling to replace their desktops with a CELL based computer.

Shouldn't your PC already fly to garbage? The PS2 Linux kit should have replaced your PC according to the logic that you don't need a PC to run office apps and since a EE can run them just fine how come your PC not go bye bye?  :p

yes, but EE too slow for linux:) and 32 MB ram too small

One of the main reasons Linux is not used by some people, is because of it's lousy support for games. Now...a Linux workstation, that can run all the Linux softwares and still be able to play PS3 games?! mmm...yummy...
