Aye, AFAIR, Corinne Yu has also been very interested in the mathematical applications within computing. Sometimes that corresponds quite well with advances in computer gaming (especially 3D rendering and mathematical approximations), sometimes not. As such she may view it as an interesting challenge to help with the "computer vision" of Amazon's fledgling drone delivery service.
And it certainly can't be viewed as a downgrade in career opportunities. If the above article is correct, her direct supervisor (boss) is the Vice President of Science for Amazon.
If she was so incompetent as some would like to claim, she would not have had steady advancement on her career path. At some point your perspective future employer is going to ask your past employers about your performance and being an attractive woman (again those naysayers) isn't going to help with that. If anything the somewhat misogynistic nature of the tech field in general would be highly hostile to her making significant advances in her career without suitable ability to back it up. In other words, she'll be under far more scrutiny for her technical abilities than would a male candidate in many (not all) situations.
