Impact of Corrinne Yu for ND/PS4?

It all started with a GAF user saying this.

Corrinne Yu is about to be fired from Naugty Dog for complete and utter incompetence.

Then he goes onto saying....

Let's just say that she's been riding a false reputation for a long time, and it's largely fueled by the internet's fascination with a "super-smart and hot rocket scientest game developer". Did you know she worked at NASA? Give me a break. Talk with anyone who's worked closely with her and you will hear horror stories of just what a terrible developer she is. She was able to work at MS for so long because she's married to a very competent art director who was on the same team, and I can only assume that they didn't want to lose him. Well guess what? She got fired, he left a few months later, and now here we are picking up the pieces.

Read the Microsoft statement here:
http://www.ign.com/wikis/halo-5-xbox-one/Halo_5_Rumors_and_Leaks

“While we consider Corrinne Yu a part of our founding family and can’t wait to see where her talent takes her in her new role, we wanted to clarify a repeated misconception, most recently on an IGN podcast. Corrinne worked on a branch of our tools team and did not in fact work on either the Halo 4 or Halo 5 engine or graphics at all. Our current tools team will surely miss her enviable intellect, but we felt it fair to both her and 343 Industries to ensure that the nature of her contributions was not being misrepresented.”

She didn't do anything on Halo 4, but that's basically all they worked on for 3 years. WTF? That doesn't really match up with what she claims to have done. I have a feeling we were duped.

This kinda happens to somewhat agree with what O'Connor, from 343 Studios commented time ago.

eh? Corinne (who is amazeballs, btw) worked with our tools team. She didn't work on the engine for Halo 4 or 5. Our engine and engineering team is led by the equally talented and beautiful Dave Berger, who has been in charge since 343 started.

Take this with a grain of salt, but according to someone on NeoGAF....

Huh?

I am willing to substantiate my claims to mods. I will stand by my original statement that Corrinne is on her way out. Not sure when that will hit the press though. I am now of the opinion that some of the things I wrote should not have been posted to this forum. I do not take back those words.

First Henning (sp?) now Yu...ND hates women confirmed? :p

Funny on that recent ND presentation, they mention "dont be afraid to get rid of a bad Apple" (about employees). Heh.

If the GAF guy proves out though, will shed new light on her departure from MS, and maybe not such a loss as thought.

Halo 4 looked great maybe best on 360 and one of the only first party showcases, and Yu was involved. But I always wonder how much if any, there was an actual correlation, because it's entirely possible there was essentially zero.

Somebody else left recently to. But a bloke this time, went back to his old job at Epic. Can't remember his name though.

Brian Karis? Wonder if it's a case of butting heads with the programmers who share the same tasks. (Everyone wants to do it their own way etc.)

I dunno, I don't really buy it. Sometimes when you get really smart people in the same room they can clash and/or not see eye to eye. Inevitably the one with seniority wins and the other has to leave.

If true it suggest ND doesn't have a clue how to interview or check references. Usually technical jobs typically have test/evaluations which are used as part of the prescreening which helps vet the candidate.

It is hard to believe she would not have to showcase her skills prior to getting the job. Perhaps she's hard to work with or maybe the post is bs, hard to say but I seriously doubt she is without any technical ability as the GAF poster seemed to suggest. Not to mention this is a small world, people talk. If she is incompetent it would get out, people would know not only internally but those collaborating and on a need to know basis for timelines and resource allocation.

edit:

Here is video of Jason Gregory discussing ND; first ~ten minutes are about how they hire. Its exactly what I would expect....

double edit:

he confirms that 2 cores are reserved for the OS - interesting PS4 architecture programing discussion beginning about 43 minutes in

That's the guy. He said he just didn't gel with the culture at ND.

As for Corinne Yu, isn't it going to be awkward as her husband still works at ND doesn't he?

hm... I thought Kenneth had moved into a consultation role, working remotely for MS.

Gah, it would be pretty crappy/nutty/waste of time for them to both move because of the ND job only for her to no longer work there. :s Guess we'll have to wait and see if anything comes to light about this rumour.

It's just internet gossip (slander, really) so far. Don't make the mistake and assume some anonymous gaffer asshole is telling the truth, when all of it may just be lies posted for shits and giggles.

It's a truly crap rumour provided solely as a character attack. As an insider, whoever's providing this info is being damned unprofessional. Unless they're making shit up, because they were once stood up by Corrinne or something.

Suffice to say, if she has left ND, there'll be reasons. It'll be down to past and future employers to worry about the details. The internet shouldn't concern itself. I think the problem was she was attributed godlike reputation by people with zero knowledge on what she's actually done in her career, and then if they're proven wrong, they'd rather blame their former idol for deceit rather than accept blame for being morons lacking basic perspective*. The very fact she has a thread here about moving to ND proves this to me somewhat. How many developers get followed so closely? Major heads of studios, perhaps, but otherwise each developer is seen as part of a team and not a frickin' code-ninja power-of-ten-developers expected to take a bloody complex engine and magically make it run twice as fast with extra bells and whistles, or whatever people were wanting her to bring to the already extraordinarily capable team of ND.

*
My god, she's hot and worked at NASA and then on Halo. She wrote Halo 4 all by herself!!!!! OMGBBQ. She'll make PS4 realtime raytrace fer shur.

Have you ever interviewed tech candidates? I did. Sometimes your initial impression is wrong and you have to fix stuff when time passes. We're humans, we make mistakes all the friggin' time.

Oh, and one more thing: there's a difference between "smart" and "gets things done". I'm smart but I have hard time getting stuff done due to my utter inability to estimate ETAs*. It's possible she's "amazeballs" but so are people at ND so it's not enough to just be smart, you've got to deliver tangible things. "Incompetent" in the initial rumor is about a product of both qualities in my book.

*it took me 5 years to get from "a level of magnitude off the mark" to "took twice longer than expected"; now I just multiply by 3/2 and I'm usually OK.

She tweeted about an hour ago:

Corrine Yu said:
Naughty Dog's The Last of Us leads 2014 BAFTA Games nominations http://deve1op.net/1okwql2

People vary but I find it difficult to believe she'd be tweeting pro-ND stuff if working in the kind of acrimonious atmosphere that often precedes a firing.

I know that feeling! I always get the job done but I'm useless at gauging time scales... actually I'm just really bad with time in general!

I got headhunted into my first job from University and it all kind of snowballed from there. People always seemed to be expecting a six foot adonis with lightening dancing around my shoulders, the real me was something of a disappointment.

It took me quitting a high paid job and becoming a recluse in the hills for people to reset their expectations and be realistic about the work they wanted me to do.

OT - Thinking about it and reading a little more I'm getting the feeling that this, though no smoke without fire, is just a piece of FUD using the more recent news with Amy Henning as a way of casting doubt on the studio who are, arguably, the best that Sony have. Anything to try and derail, or slow down, the PS4 train.
