Image Quality and Framebuffer Speculations for WIP/alpha/beta/E3 games *Read the first post*

Too bad it's all from Chatou, it's very clean and awesome looking map (IQ is much better than in U2). No screenshots from Airfield so far?

they just wanted to be like the monkey island remakes. but thats 2d which makes it much simpler. what they're doing is horribly inefficient.

IIRC it was actually a debug tool that allowed them to switch between the two renderers. They liked the ability so much that they thought it would be cool to have the feature in the actual game.

Not sure I'd call it inefficient, just taxing. :p Much rather have the feature, and slight reduction in resolution, than not have the feature at full 720p. Assuming the dual renderers is the reason why the resolution may be slightly low.

Yeah, on this map. Airfield is filled with jaggies.

Do we have any idea if they plan to use MLAA or FXAA? Thought they originally planned to use MLAA. Would be weird to go from 2xMSAA on UC2 to no AA in UC3. Though GeoW3 did exactly that and it didn't destroy the IQ, so it may not be that bad.

the chateau level looks very similar on my TV, only a little bit os shimmering in distance object, and that is very very little. Airfield is rough on shimmering and shadows which is noticeable when the game is running. I use a computer monitor with no overscan nor those consumer tv edge enhancement mind you that.

There's nothing suggesting a hit to image quality for batman.

:?:

It's 720p from what I can tell, but I'd need a downloadable file to have a look at any edge AA or MSAA.

Compression was hiding quite a lot, which makes it difficult to say for certain especially considering it's a dark environment. There are definitely spots where there is visible aliasing though. I'd guess no AA at the moment.

Thanks Al, I guess I was right.

Also wondering if a game that far into development could implement an AA solution like MLAA or FXAA - is it possible in theory? FXAA sounds cheap and does a good job at improving the IQ.

I'm a simple "I love graphics" gamer who has nothing to do with development and programming like many guys here so excuse my ignorance about many things that you guys take for granted.

They definitely can and they should - 1ms of GPU time is really cheap, its only 0.5fps loss in 30hz game, its really nothing. I would probably accept game that runs in constant 29fps with AA than 30fps and aliased.

BTW its actually interesting that Sony's GPU MLAA implementation takes 16ms of RSX time, when FXAA only 1ms.
