Heh. You should try looking at a good CRT someday.

I've used proffesional-quality CRT's and high quality LCD's. The only time that a CRT is preferred is when you are going to be doing colour correction for print material. This is pretty much accepted as the standard in the graphic arts and CG fields.

yes the deformity happens... it doesnt happens in 1600x1200 res but you just have to adjust your monitor

But why 5:4 aspect ratio (1280*1024)? It's not exactly optimal for games or movies. I'm not much of a fan of 16:9 either, but I would prefer that to 5:4. Sure 5:4 is nice for viewing web pages or doing various work, but I would much rather see a more oblong screen that could be swiveled to a vertical position for that kind of viewing.

I would consider buying a 19" LCD if there was one with standard 4:3 format, and it was guaranteed to be free of completely dead (black or white) pixels for at least 3 years.

    Little OT:

    A bold question: why don't we go to a 1:1 ratio? I don't really like 16/9, it's not a trend i really like.

Evildeus, why would you want a 1:1 ratio? AFAIK, the human field of vision is wider than it is high.

Well, i don't know, i thought it was like what i see. If you say it isn't, then there's no point.

But well, 16/9 is sure not how the eye see things. So i thought the direction should go in direction of 1:1 (or whatever near the field of vision) and not further.

16:9 gives a more cinematic feeling, generally preferred for movies.

For games, I feel 4:3 is just about perfect.

For anything else, I don't care much about the ratio.

    (edit)
Actually, if you want a better match for human vision, I think you will need a rounded display, nearly elliptical. That wouldn't be very practical at all.

Well, that and concave, and cover a large portion of our actual vision. I'm sure this'll only happen in headsets (having a screen that large would just be unfeasible....for cost or space considerations).

For most tasks I feel I'm more in need of vertical resolution than horizontal. 1:1 ratio would probably be fine most of the time, except maybe for gaming where I think 4:3 would feel more natural in general.

Well, it might be more natural for composing or writing, but only if you're doing one task at a time. Having a wide horizontal display is definitely nicer if you're going to have multiple windows open at once (which is frequent when I'm programming...others may have other uses for multiple windows).

For programming, I much prefer 5:4 over 16:10. The more LOC I can see at once the better, width isn't that important.
