IGN.com interview with MS, j. Allard: Compression problems...

I don't think Allard is really all that afraid of something that is going to launch a year from now. At that time Xbox 360 will have second generation games going against PS3's first generation games.
Though I don't necessarily compare Xbox 360 to Dreamcast, which are both relatively easy-to-develop platforms as far as I hear, do you think second/third-generation games for Dreamcast did matter that much when PS2 was released?
Companies are already fleeing the PS3 as the development costs are going to be too high too fast.
Have you thought about why Xbox 360 development cost is supposed to be significantly lower than that of PS3?

Just another question to add to this: Is it the devs who are multiplatform (PC/Xbox360) who are saying it is cheaper :?:

This is something I don't quite understand though. If PS3 games are releasing after an extra year in development to XB360 games, how do you compare generations? Lets say Oblivion has been 3 ears in development, 1 year on XB360 kits. Heavenly Sword may be 3 years in development but with much longer on PS3 kits (2 years?) so comparatively PS3 titles would all be that much better if the PS3 really were to take that long to release.

Whether PS3 launches early or late I can't see any reason to believe it's software development will be behind XB360's on account of that.
As if Sony is just sitting on their launch while devs code at a relaxed pace?

It's kind of silly to start redefining first-generation and second-generation at this point, seemingly to give Sony some kind of perceived advantage. Though I don't know that I'd consider 1 year enough time to be part of that "second generation for the X360"--I think that'd still be 1st generation against Sony's launch line-up.

Exactly. "generations" is a multi-use term denoting both software within a specific platform's lifecycle and hardware across platforms of similar power.

So 360 and ps3 are within the same hardware gen. But the first 12 months of any platform release is considered "its" first software generation. Games representing "new generations" tend to be released for the fall/holiday season

October 2005 - September 2006 = x360s 1st gen
April 2006 - August 2007 = Ps3's 1st gen

How about this: 1st generation=games that were developed under a compressed timeframe for a product launch and/or a studios FIRST attempt on new hardware.

To me, everything after that doesnt really matter.

Yes and no. Potentially, they could write the MCE for any platform, but I'm sure it's not in their best interest and surely isn't cheap in term of development cost. Personally, MCE is only a small step. Ultimately, a server edition allowing MS to deliver content to your 360 is the end game. Allowing you to login in via your Live account...make purchases of movies, tv programs (similar fashion as video ipod) or what not and have it stream to your 360.

The same question was asked on the major nelson podcast today and the Win MCE program manager said they have no plans to do so. Didnt say whether or not they COULD, just that they seem to have no plans at all to do so.

I don't see how people and Devs can get on MS cases for using DVD. What else are they suppose to use right now? Blue ray and HD-DVD are just begining to get into a format war neither format is really out.

Xbox360 would have to be delayed nearly a year or more if it chose anything else besides DVD format. Sony is taking a huge risk on blue ray it will pretty much be the first device that uses blue ray that the masses will see and if there are any unforseen produciton issues or longevity issues with these untested drives Sony is in trouble.

Sony is basically launching the Blue-Ray format with the PS3 and unless the new format launches without a hitch in gen 1 hardware there will be problems for them.

Compression and multi disk games are the more realistic solution for the Xbox360, it's cheaper to make, games are cheaper to produce and the drives are a lot more reliable.

hey, let's keep reality and common sense out of this thread. ;)

Well PS3 devs can make games on DVDs too so cheaper to produce games shouldn't be a problem here with the PS3.

Yea but then what is the point of paying extra for your PS3 because of blue ray. Also what if batches of Blue ray drives have issues and users are left with faulty units? What is the likelyhood of Blue Ray actually getting high non problematic yields on basically a first gen drive?
