It's funny but I have none of the issues in real life that I have when it comes to the Internet with the exception of online friends I know in real life.
Things like miscommunications, assumptions, jokes, etc...

They are very clear in real life but not so much on the Internet.
I've found that not using smilies tends to lead people to think even the most ridiculous thing you type is really what you seriously believe.

Notice how there is no emot-icon to designate humour?
People will really believe that I think it's strange that real human emotions can't be sent through a host of 1's and 0's simply through text.
 
I know what you mean. I tend to use a wide range of facial expressions IRL, my overuse of emoticons is reflective of that. ;)
