Why is Hitler in the Time Magazine? Especially under person of the year.

Didn't the people who wrote the magazine know about the way he treated people?

Even before Hitler committed genocide he was one heck of a racist bugger, so why was he named "person of the year"?

I thought the world we currently live in now is screwed up more than it was in the past, guess I was wrong. :?

He must have paid off Time. That's the ONLY possible way he could be "person of the year".

.

Check the date. In 1938, Hitler had totally turned around and rebult the Germany that was left crippled and broken after the first world war. He was seen as a strong, effective statesman. Of course after that he went to war and we know what he was really after.

You have to remember that newspapers like "Time" reflect the era. Things change with the perspective of time. How do you think Hitler would be remembered if Germany had won the war? How do you think that George W Bush will be remembered in a few years? How do you think he will be remembered by the Iraqis?

History is all about perspective. You should go and read up on history generally - there's a lot of fascinating stuff out there, especially once you scratch through the surface of what you *think* you know about common events.

IIRC the "Person of the Year" title is simply given to the person with the most impact during the year in question, good or bad.

Bouncing Zabaglione Bros., I have done a fair bit of research in my spare time on ancient history. Mainly on the crusades and about people like Peter the Hermit.

Frankly, I'm not surprised about peoples behaviour during 1095.

I wasn't quite sure about what "person of the year" was until you guys told me.
Now I understand.

During the time of my post I thought "person of the year" meant you are a great person. IE: helpful, peacemonger, etc...

I had thought Time was idolising Hitler and what he stood for.

There's always criticism and complaining when TIME choses someone like Hitler, Khomeni, or bin Laden for PotY, but people just need to remember that PotY is not the Nobel Peace Prize...

Uhm, in the timeframe with which he was given Person of the Year, everyone "idolized" Hitler, including Time Magazine. It was a year later that war began. You have to keep that in mind, as BZB said.

Hitler didn't become known as the monster that he is today until after the war began.

Heh, why would anybody care what Time Magazine says? Might as well read a Michael Moore book at that rate..
