i just decided to become a vegan

You apperantly dont know what your talking about. Vegetarian food is by far more tasty than anything else out there. Just find yourself a good indian restaurant and your mouth will be in heavean.
I think you will find indian restruants are quite willing to use animal products in their food ( say like yogourt or cream). Vegetarian != vegan.

Personally, I've never seen the reason for all the hysteria about the risk of "Mad Cow Disease" being transmitted to humans.

People seem to overlook the fact that Scrapie, a Spongiform Encephalopathy which affects sheep, has been quite commonplace for well over two hundred years. Surely if humans are at risk of catching BSE we would have been equally at risk of catching Scrapie also?

One thing is for certain though, there is something fundamentally wrong with giving herbivorous cows feed produced from the carcasses of other cows. That is why BSE became so widespread so quickly.

Your logic is flawed. While I do not doubt your vego indian restaurant food is yummalicious, said vego indian dishes with a nice thick grilled garlic-and-herb-marinated steak on the side is arguably even better! :p

Dead cow = yum.

Oh boy, yet another thread were people show their ignorance of what being a vegetarian/vegan is like....

and how do you know for sure that we havent been getting CJD from sheep or even pigs?

Slightly OT, but I heard you can catch madcow's disease thru carrots and potatoes now.

I wonder why so many have a hard time understanding the concept? Out of curiosity are you a vegan or vegetarian?

I'm a vegeterian. I admire vegans, but it's just a bit too hardcore for myself (though generally I don't drink much milk and only eat free-range eggs).

Sorry for the bornyesterdayness but whats the difference between vegans and vegetarians?
Vegetarians don't eat delicious animals, Vegans are from Vega, don't eat delicious animal, have strange powers, and don't eat any product created with animal content (That include 100% animal stuff like milk, eggs, dog poop (O-Jelly), etc..).

CJD is going to kill a LOT of people

Where's the evidence for that? The figures I've seen for this country suggest that the incidence rate of vCJD has peaked and is likely falling.
Agreed. Sage, you're being manipulated if that's what you think.

Something like 1,000,000 mad cows in the UK, and only 100 odd cases of CJK. That's so insignificant in today's world. You only have a handful of cases in North America, so worrying about death from CJD is just plain stupid. Recently in Canada a study was done that estimated some 5,800 people die prematurely each year from pollution. I wouldn't be surprised if the per-capita rate was worse south of the border. Then you have heart disease, homocide, auto accidents (which I recall you were damn close to having recently), each of which is equally or even more dangerous than pollution. CJD is waaaaaaaaaay down on the list.

I've seen lots of vegans that are really fat as well (especially Indian relatives), so the decreased chance of death is not very solid.

I'm criticizing your decision, but like _xxx_, I find your reasoning very irrational. I plan on giving up meat when I'm in my 30's or 40's (I'm trying to gain weight right now), but its more for philosophical reasons.

Exact numbers. The last column, vCJD, is the 'possibly infectious by eating cow' variant. 150 reported or likely cases in the UK during the last 11 years.

Although the fact that Mad Cow disease causes variant CJD had already been strongly established, researchers at the University College of London nevertheless created transgenic mice complete with “humanizedâ€￾ brains genetically engineered with human genes to try to prove the link once and for all. When the researchers injected one strain of the “humanizedâ€￾ mice with infected cow brains, they came down with the same brain damage seen in human variant CJD, as expected. But when they tried this in a different strain of transgenic “humanizedâ€￾ mice, those mice got sick too, but most got sick from what looked exactly like sporadic CJD!

and lets not forget that we dont test our dead for CJD. there could be a lot more people dieing of it than we realize.
