At least here in the states, the munis that have installed fiber have had multiple challenges from either the cable companies, the telcos, or both. So far the munis are winning 100% of the time.

First time I looked in this thread since that question. Wow, is all I can say about Chattanooga Tennessee. That is simply amazing that rural land would have that kind of service. It now makes me hate Comcast and AT&T all that much more. Is this something PG&E would be able to do or too much red tape in California?

Legally, yes they would be able to. Though in a weird twist, they would be able to do it faster in cheater outside of the major cities. Overhead powerline right of ways are a lot easier, cheapers, and quicker to string than underground residential wiring. It is a little easier for a municipal utility to do it because of the easier access to bonds. Plus PGE is well behind in smart grid and has gone down a completely different implementation path.

I have 12/2 Comcast, much better than the 3Mb dsl I had just few blocks away, for only $20 less.
I could get 50Mb(docsis 3.0) service if I wanted to for around $100 btw, though a bit pointless with a 250GB cap.

    Funny.
After saying I couldn't get fiber the phone company just put fiber in my neighborhood and they're installing it today. 30 Mbsp is $59/month. I can get 100 Mbps if I want to shell out $299/month!! 50 Mbsp is $99 I think. 30 is the same price as my old cable line an at least double the speed.

just tested. here in nelson got 4.61mbit/s download + 0.46mbit/s upload (ok not fast compared to ppl here, though these are real rates not quoted rates) but :( only 10MB a month cap!
One thing I found is when I switched over to linux (ubuntu10.10) about a month ago from winXP my internet speed quadrupled! can anyone explain that? (no viruses, malware etc on windows)

Im on 1.8Mb up and 0.37 down, obviously thats wrong given the fact that I hit >1.5MB a second (12Mb) downloading from official sites like AMD.com. It varies greatly throughout the day.

    I tested at http://www.consumerspeedtest.org.nz/

Costs me $110NZ and I get 100GB per month plus phone like is additional.

this from someone who doesnt know his up from his down!
yes I meant 10GB, Ive only hit the limit like a couple of months. last year it was 3GB + then I'ld hit the limit each month.
Me + my partner dont download warez, films, or play games etc so 10GB a month is reasonable

I'm guessing you're close to the switching station (not the right name, but I can't remember) and that they haven't actually capped your bandwidth to the advertised rate. Lucky you. :)

I'm also within a few blocks of the switching station at my place, but bandwidth is capped to the advertised rate. But at least that means I get the advertised rate 24/7.

    Regards,
    SB

comcast raised my speeds supposedly, but my downloads never exceed shy of 800kbs, even wth 6mb connection, i can't tell difference back in the days when it was 3mb other than my bill

Me and my partner have a steamy downloading relationship with PC games also Im addicted to downloading TV shows off the net, its my one pirate thing I do. I justify it by saying that they'll either come out for free in NZ or not at all. I've hit 150GB in some months! I hate waiting.

Im capped for data not for data rate. The speeds I have been getting have been steadily improving I guess as they upgrade the hardware in my area. Its actually more savage this way because if I go over it costs me 1c per MB!

well even here in iceland there was some challenge in 2000 when they started deploying fiber to the home
there was one political party protesting sjálfstæðiflokkurinn and that was the only challenge
    to fiber to the home

just as a comparison for 50 Mbsp i pay about 50/month dollars here in iceland
100 Mbsp it is about 97 dollars per month

I've had lots of problems with my Internet connection, but now it has been working a bit better and gives good speed. It's a cable connection 100/5Mb. I'm surprised it now gives such a good speed even at busy hours. 39e/month

Well you EU-ish area (yeah, throw in Iceland) folks pay nearly double for so many things I guess I shouldn't begrudge you getting much faster broadband for less. Cheers.
