The primary reason why people buy new systems is the graphics upgrade.
nope, its to play the new games they want to play, which requires the new system. If movies suddenly only started coming out on a nextgen format and there was no longer DVD production you'd see the same thing with nextgen movie format adoption. But you dont see that, because DVD is alive and well and far more affordable and not to mention established. As long as a previous media delivery system exists (your last gen players and consoles) and the media in demand itself is being produced, then the system lives a hell of a lot longer then whats considered the standard for graphics of the time.
The majority of people dont upgrade their system because they want to, its because they have to in order to get what they want. The minority are the ones claiming to do it because its a status symbol or because they need the far superior graphics. Their 'nextgen experiance' if you will.
