How much do people really care about graphics?

The primary reason why people buy new systems is the graphics upgrade.

nope, its to play the new games they want to play, which requires the new system. If movies suddenly only started coming out on a nextgen format and there was no longer DVD production you'd see the same thing with nextgen movie format adoption. But you dont see that, because DVD is alive and well and far more affordable and not to mention established. As long as a previous media delivery system exists (your last gen players and consoles) and the media in demand itself is being produced, then the system lives a hell of a lot longer then whats considered the standard for graphics of the time.

The majority of people dont upgrade their system because they want to, its because they have to in order to get what they want. The minority are the ones claiming to do it because its a status symbol or because they need the far superior graphics. Their 'nextgen experiance' if you will.

Very true. Look at how well the PS2 is still selling. There are tons of people that are only buying them now because the price is extremely low and there are a lot of games available. Those people don't give a crap about the PS3 or the Xbox360. Most people want to buy a PS3 because it will allow you to play MGS4 or Gran Turismo Whatever. If they could get those games on the PS2, they probably would wait A LOT longer before picking up the PS3. I bought a Wii and I'd have to say my reasoning for buying it was quite different. I've become massively bored with gaming over the last year or two, having played games for a good twenty years, and the Wii looked like an opportunity for something fresh. In the past, I've only ever bought systems to play specific games that interested me. The Wii is the first system I've purchased within the first year of launch. I bought it on the promise of good things to come, without any real knowledge of what games are coming out besides Zelda. The only Zelda I ever played was that Zelda on SNES and a bit of the Gamecube one. That said, I think a lot of the people that bought the Wii just want to get their hands on the new Mario Game when it's out, etc.
